Burke County combines nature experiences with history and culture. At Lake James, water activities and hiking trails take center stage; the state parks offer more trails through mountain landscapes. Museums, Valdese, and Henry River Mill Village offer other perspectives on the region’s history. If you’re planning a trip, you can start by considering which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

Lake James and Trails in the State Parks

Lake James State Park is located in Burke and McDowell counties. Boating, swimming, and fishing are possible there on Lake James. Hiking trails also come in different lengths: the park offers 22 miles of trails at Paddy’s Creek and 4.5 miles at Catawba River. These figures give you a concrete reference point if you’re considering a longer or shorter designated trail.

Jacob Fork Access is in Burke County, within South Mountains State Park. Elevations in the park reach up to 3,000 feet. High Shoals Falls is one of the notable features of this access area. The park also offers more than 40 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. This gives you different ways to experience the landscape on foot, by bike, or on horseback.

The Fonta Flora State Trail is a beginner-friendly, double-track trail with views of Lake James. It offers another option for travelers who would like to combine the lake with a trail experience.

Museums and Waldensian History

The History Museum of Burke County charges no admission. It houses more than 23,000 artifacts in 10,000 square feet of exhibit space. Its collections span from prehistory to the county’s industrial development in the late 1960s. A visit to the museum thus combines a large collection with a broad sweep of local history.

The Waldensian Heritage Museum houses the largest collection of Waldensian artifacts in the United States. The Trail of Faith runs along level concrete, with a seating wall extending its entire length. School trips to the Trail of Faith include scale-model reconstructions of historic sites, including a 60-foot-deep cave. During these school trips, participants also experience a working sawmill that is more than 130 years old. The school trip program also includes an original house from 1893, built after the Waldensians arrived in Burke County from Europe.

In Valdese, the Then & Now Walking Tour takes visitors through town and focuses on historical stories and selected downtown buildings. The Waldensian Festival brings locals and visitors together to celebrate Waldensian history and culture. It is one of the events in Valdese; if you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the dates before you make plans.

A Film Village as Another Excursion

Henry River Mill Village was the original filming location for District 12 in the first Hunger Games movie. Visitors can explore the site’s remains on guided tours. This connects a visit to the former mill village with a specific link to film history.

These highlights give your search a direction, without requiring every excursion to be the same kind of experience.
