Transylvania County has 250 cascading waterfalls. Forest landscapes, historic sites, and cultural traditions also offer different ways to plan your trip.

Waterfalls and Forest Landscapes

Gorges State Park spans more than 8,000 acres of temperate rainforest. It includes 26 waterfalls and a section of the 70-mile Foothills Trail. This park brings together rainforest, waterfalls, and part of an extensive hiking trail.

Several waterfalls with different features are located in Pisgah National Forest. Looking Glass Falls is a 60-foot cascade visible from Highway 276. Moore Cove Falls is a 50-foot, uninterrupted cascade in front of a rock overhang; a moderate 1.5-mile round-trip hike leads to it. Sliding Rock is a natural rock waterslide in this national forest.

Forest Trails and Their Usage Rules

DuPont State Recreational Forest is located in Cedar Mountain in Transylvania County. It encompasses ecological communities, lakes, waterfalls, and a multi-use trail network. Visitors are welcome daily year-round from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The trail network is open to hikers, cyclists, horseback riders, people walking dogs, and other forest visitors. Before your visit, check for information about specific trail closures and restrictions, as these can change.

In southern Transylvania County, Headwaters State Forest is designated for low-impact, dispersed recreational activities such as hiking and wildlife observation. Its surroundings are undeveloped, pristine, and remote; there are no public facilities. Only foot traffic is permitted on its roads and trails. The options therefore differ clearly: DuPont’s trail network is open to multiple user groups, while Headwaters is restricted to foot traffic.

History, Music, and Local Traditions

Cradle of Forestry Heritage Site is a 6,500-acre heritage area. The Biltmore Forest School, America’s first forestry school, was founded on its grounds in 1898. Allison-Deaver House was built in 1815 and is believed to be the oldest surviving half-timbered house in western North Carolina. Historic McGaha Chapel also tells the story of the post-Civil War era: it was completed in 1872 during the difficult Reconstruction period.

An Old-Time Sing-along is also held at McGaha Chapel on the first Saturday in June. In Brevard, White Squirrel Day brings locals and visitors together as a community tradition. If you’re planning to attend a future edition, check the relevant dates and event details.

Brevard Music Center is a summer educational institute and music festival. Young musicians prepare and perform musical works there at a high artistic level. The Historic Downtown Walking Tour Guide introduces historic buildings in Brevard’s Main Street National Historic District. The cultural offerings thus range from the history of forestry education and historic buildings to music and community traditions.
