Discover Halifax: History and Nature
Accommodation in Halifax
Historic Halifax invites visitors to take guided tours of several authentically restored and furnished buildings. Tours take place during regular opening hours; tour schedules may change. If you prefer to explore on your own, you can take the self-guided tour, which also includes access to the Underground Railroad Trail. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Experience History on Site
At Historic Halifax, a document later known as the Halifax Resolves was unanimously adopted on April 12. It is considered the first official act by an entire colony recommending independence from England. A tour of the restored and furnished buildings offers a way to connect with the site's history.
The remains of the Roanoke Canal also tell the story of the region: they were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Roanoke Canal Museum's exhibits focus on the history of the Roanoke River Valley, the engineering achievement of the canal, and its later use as a source of hydroelectric power.
Another historic destination is Allen Grove Rosenwald School, a well-preserved Rosenwald schoolhouse from the 1920s. Free tours of the school can be arranged upon request. If you would like to visit, request a tour in advance.
Explore the Canal and Waterfront
The Roanoke Canal Trail follows the canal's original towpath for 7.2 miles between Roanoke Lake and Weldon. The trail connects a specific route length and two named endpoints with the history of the canal. Route information may change as trail management changes, so check before planning your visit. The trail is open daily from sunrise to sunset, though operating information may change.
For a view of the water, River Falls Park has an overlook with a sweeping view of the Roanoke River rapids. At Weldon Boat Landing, visitors can navigate the rapids by kayak or canoe. These are different ways to experience the river landscape: from the overlook or out on the water. River conditions and access may vary, so check current conditions before setting out.
Nature, Birds, and Trails
Medoc Mountain State Park is located in Halifax County on a 325-foot-high remnant of a once-mighty mountain range formed 350 million years ago. Its geological history offers a striking contrast to the historical themes surrounding the Roanoke Canal.
At Sylvan Heights Bird Park, you can see more than 2,000 waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds. In The Landing Zone, visitors can interact with hundreds of friendly parakeets and the flock of Caribbean flamingos. Which species are available may vary depending on the season and weather. The park also regularly offers educational programs and special events; dates change, so check the current schedule in advance.
Halifax County 4-H Rural Life Center has six to seven miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding. For those interested in fishing, Lake Gaston has several game fish species, including striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and several types of catfish. Fish populations and local regulations may change; check current rules if you have specific fishing plans.
Events and Local Offerings
Ed Fitts Amphitheater is part of the Acorn Center complex and hosts outdoor concerts and performances in summer. Since the program is seasonal and may change, check the latest event dates. The tradition of Halifax Harvest Days also continues, with the event growing each year. Check the dates before planning your visit around it.
Halifax County Farmers Market offers produce, crafts, baked goods, plants, cut flowers, meat, eggs, soap, and candles. Its selection appeals to a range of interests, from shopping for local produce to browsing handmade goods. Vendors and market operations may change.
