Mecklenburg County manages more than 8,300 acres of nature preserves throughout the county. Its nature offerings include four nature centers and a nature area at the Eastway Regional Recreation Center. The centers and nature area offer environmental education programs as well as general visitor information. This lets you combine nature experiences with insights into environmental education.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

At the county’s nature sites, you can cycle on off-road trails or paved greenways. Boating and paddling by canoe, kayak, or paddleboard are also possible at nature sites. You can fish at pond and river locations among the nature offerings. These options provide different ways to spend time outdoors—on trails, on the water, or fishing.

The Raptor Trail at Latta Nature Preserve is a zoo educational trail about birds of prey. The three-quarter-mile trail introduces more than 30 feathered ambassador birds. The Whitewater Center’s trail network is maintained for public use and can only be accessed through official trail entrances from the Whitewater Center grounds. Since the access policy may change, check trail status before your visit.

History and Special Places

The Trail of History uses representative statues along the urban section of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway to preserve the significance of people who contributed to the history, growth, and development of Mecklenburg County. The trail currently includes eleven statue locations along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway in Midtown Charlotte.

Historic Rosedale features 8.9 acres of urban green space with gardens and wooded areas to explore on foot. A tour of Historic Rosedale shares the stories of the people who lived and worked there. The historic Siloam School is one of the oldest surviving African American schoolhouses in Mecklenburg County. It is also one of the last surviving Rosenwald-era schools in the local community; the museum uses it as an educational resource.

Historical visits are available in different formats. General admission includes current exhibitions, docent-led tours, and self-guided exploration of the historic grounds. You can enter the 1774 Rock House as part of a docent-led tour offered by the museum. In contrast, the 1774 Homesite offers a self-guided audio tour of approximately 40 minutes.

Science and Travel Planning

Discovery Place Science is an interactive science museum with hands-on exhibits. This makes science a distinct focus for a visit alongside nature and history.

When looking for a hotel for your stay, first decide whether nature, historic places, or science should shape your trip. Plan the rest of your trip around the themes you choose, and when selecting a hotel, compare its specifically stated location with your plans.
