Madison County: Trails, River and Culture
Accommodation in Madison County
When planning your trip to Madison County, you can start by deciding whether trails, water activities, or culture are your priority. The specific offerings range from scenic overlooks and hiking trails to music and local history.
Trails, Elevations, and Views
Madison County includes the Appalachian Trail and hundreds of miles of trails in Pisgah National Forest. From the Appalachian Trail in Pisgah National Forest, Max Patch offers 360-degree panoramic views. The access road to the parking area is a rough, six-mile gravel road; a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for the trip. As road conditions can change, check them locally in advance.
Another elevation to note is the summit of Bailey Mountain Preserve, which reaches 3,554 feet. When choosing a trail, you can compare length, surface, and difficulty. The Dr. W. Otis Duck Memorial Greenway is paved and about two miles long. The Spring Creek Nature Trail runs along Spring Creek, is 1.6 miles long, and is rated easy. The Greenway is slightly longer; the Spring Creek Nature Trail, meanwhile, is rated easy.
The trails’ different themes can also help guide your plans. The Laurel River Trail passes the ruins of the 1920s logging settlement of Runion. The Lover’s Leap Trail first follows the Appalachian Trail along the French Broad River, then climbs to the Lover’s Leap overlook. One trail passes remnants of logging history, while the other combines a riverside route with a climb to a named overlook.
Water and Outdoor Activities
Section 9 of the French Broad between Barnard Park and Hot Springs features Class II to IV rapids. Blue Heron Whitewater offers trips on the French Broad River between Marshall and Hot Springs. Check schedules before your trip.

History, Music, and Local Culture
The Rural Heritage Museum displays artifacts relating to the history and culture of the Southern Appalachians in a historic building on the Mars Hill University campus. Madison County has three Civil War commemorative markers, one in each of its three towns. The county’s historic barns also tell the story of Appalachian farming and tobacco history. You can explore them on private tours, minibus and bus tours, and during Annual Barn Day; confirm tour formats and event dates in advance.
The Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre presents plays, musicals, and original works at the Owen Theatre in Mars Hill. Check the schedule before your trip. Madison County’s unbroken ballad-singing tradition is considered the longest in the United States. On Friday evenings in Marshall, you can hear bluegrass, acoustic, mountain, country, and folk music at the Depot. Zuma Coffee hosts a weekly bluegrass jam on Thursday evenings, led by Bobby Hicks. Check before your trip to see whether the music programs are taking place.
The Hot Springs Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday and offers fresh local produce and handmade goods. Market visits and music events add cultural options to your stay alongside hiking trails and outdoor activities.
