From the overlooks of Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, the view stretches all the way to Tennessee. Ashe County combines landscapes like these with museums, frescoes and regional offerings. If you’d like to tailor your trip to different interests, you’ll find both connections to nature and specific places to explore history, art and recreation here.

Landscape and regional orientation

At Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, Luther Rock and other overlooks offer views stretching to Tennessee. The plant life is also remarkable: more than 700 plant species are found in the area, including Dutchman's pipevine. The sweeping views and botanical diversity give your visit different highlights—sometimes the expansive vista takes center stage, and sometimes the variety of plants.

The Big Horse Creek Scenic Byway offers another way to get to know Ashe County’s landscape. The 17.9-mile route begins at the intersection of N.C. 194 and N.C. 88 in Warrensville and continues to the Virginia state line. The Byway is especially representative of rural life in the mountains of Ashe County around Lansing. These endpoints provide clear reference points for planning your route; in Lansing, the rural character of the mountain region also comes to the fore.

At the New River, New River State Park offers a distinct experience. The park has seven access points along the river, which is designated a National Wild and Scenic River. This protected status is part of the New River’s identity and distinguishes this natural setting from the mountain views and the Scenic Byway described above.

History, frescoes and culture

The Museum of Ashe County History is housed in Jefferson’s historic 1904 courthouse. Specific exhibition topics include the Virginia Creeper exhibit, featuring a 30-foot-long HO-scale diorama. A museum visit therefore brings together a historic building and a detailed exhibit. The information about its length and scale also makes the diorama interesting to visitors with a particular interest in models and their scales.

Two churches also invite visitors to explore art and architectural history. Saint Mary's Episcopal Church was built near West Jefferson in 1905. It houses Ben Long’s frescoes Mary Great with Child, John the Baptist and The Mystery of Faith. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs houses a life-size depiction of the Last Supper; the church was built in 1901. The churches’ construction dates distinguish them chronologically, while the frescoes give each its own artistic focus.

For an evening of performing arts, Ashe County Little Theatre offers live theater featuring local actors. Since individual productions run for a limited time, check current performance dates before your trip. Food and crafts offer a different glimpse of local offerings: Ashe County Cheese is the oldest cheese factory in the southern United States and sells more than 20 varieties of its own Ashe County cheese. In the host community of West Jefferson, a farmers market offers a wide selection of fresh local produce, handmade products and homemade goods.

Recreation at Ashe Park

At Ashe Park, you can choose from several different recreational activities. The High Country Disc Golf Course is a free, 18-hole course open to the public. There is also a bike skills course designed by Black Diamond Trail Builders. The two activities cater to different interests, and neither requires a particular itinerary.

Fishing with a license is permitted at the Ashe Park Trout Pond. Under catch-and-release rules, no more than three fish per person may be caught. Since park rules may change, check them before your visit. Along with the disc golf course and bike skills course, the Ashe Park offers a specific range of options for different recreational interests; the respective rules and conditions remain important when planning your visit.
