River landscapes, historic sites and seasonal farm offerings give Lincoln County a variety of travel experiences. The trails along the South Fork of the Catawba River, Lincolnton’s history and insights into agriculture each offer a distinct focus.

Trails Through River and Hill Country

The South Fork Rail Trail runs along the South Fork of the Catawba River in Rhyne Preserve, which covers 324 acres. Mature floodplain forests line the river, and the natural area also includes a bald cypress swamp. Lincoln County’s landscape is generally hilly, with gentle streams and creeks.

At 1.8 miles, the South Fork Rail Trail is considerably longer than the 0.3-mile Ramsour's Mill Trail. The shorter trail has a natural surface and crosses the site of the Battle of Ramsour Mill. There is also a canoe and kayak launch along Clark Creek on the trail grounds.

The parks also offer different amenities: West Lincoln Park has a walking path, Rock Springs Nature Preserve has walking and hiking trails, and Rescue Squad Park has a disc golf course. Beattys Ford Park has a fishing pier that is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

History and Public Art in Lincolnton

The South Aspen Street Historic District encompasses more than 70 historic resources. The West Main Street Historic District preserves Lincolnton’s largest collection of surviving 19th-century buildings from the pre-Civil War era. The two districts offer different ways to explore the city’s historic architecture.

A walking tour leads to colorful public murals in Lincolnton, including “Threshing Grain,” painted by Richard H. Jansen in 1938. A historic cemetery tour visits three historic cemeteries listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lincoln Quilt Trail brings the county’s history and heritage to life through quilt squares at various public and private locations. These include historic barns and working farms. This view of local heritage therefore extends beyond the historic districts to include places connected with agriculture.

The Mundy House is a historic log cabin dating from the early 19th century. Visitors can tour the house and explore the grounds.
