Schenectady: Waterfalls, Trails and History
Accommodation in Schenectady
Nature trails, routes for recreation and transportation, historic sites and performing arts give trips to Schenectady different focal points. When planning your hotel stay, you can first consider whether you mainly want to hike, learn about the area’s history, or plan for cultural and seasonal offerings. The distances and features of the trails can help you decide which outing is right for you.
Hiking among forests, gorges and waterfalls
Plotter Kill Preserve has more than seven miles of hiking trails and three waterfalls. The Wolf Hollow Nature Trail is shorter: its wooded path along Wolf Hollow Gorge is just under a mile long and accessible to beginners and experienced hikers alike. This gives you a choice between a trail network with several waterfalls and a single, shorter route along a gorge. The County Forest also offers opportunities for hiking and cross-country skiing across 104 acres.
The nature trails at Mabee Farm Historic Site run for one mile through the woods and provide access to a pond and a small beach on the Mohawk River. At the Schenectady Rose Garden, plants take center stage instead of forest trails: it features more than 100 rose varieties and 2,000 rose bushes. The natural attractions range from wooded routes and waterfalls to a large collection of roses.
Hiking and biking trails at a glance
Schenectady County maintains nine miles of the Empire State Trail in the Town of Rotterdam. The Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail starts in Pattersonville, a hamlet in the Town of Rotterdam, runs east through the City of Schenectady and the Town of Niskayuna, and then continues into Albany County. For residents and visitors in Schenectady County, the trail offers a way to get around for both recreation and transportation.
For bus rides between downtown Albany and Schenectady, CDTA BusPlus offers bus rapid transit with a limited number of stops along the 17-mile NY Route 5. Schedules and fares may change, so check both before making a specific trip. The trail and BusPlus information covers different ways to get around the region.
Historic sites and performing arts
The Historic Stockade is the oldest neighborhood in the City of Schenectady and has been continuously inhabited for more than 300 years. More than 400 houses in the neighborhood are 200 years old. Mabee Farm Historic Site offers a different glimpse into history: it includes three 18th-century houses, an 18th-century Dutch barn, orchards, gardens and woodland trails. The farm has been in operation since 1705; the site offers educational and recreational opportunities related to its history.
Proctors also combines a historic past with a large performance space. F. F. Proctor had the theater built in 1926; it was a popular theater where vaudeville performers appeared. The historic MainStage has 2,646 seats. Its stage house is large enough for major Broadway shows. These details describe the venue’s history and capacity, not the schedule for a particular visit.
Seasonal offerings and special programs
Maple Ski Ridge’s seasonal Nordic Nights are for cross-country skiers, backcountry skiers, splitboarders, snowshoers and other winter sports enthusiasts. At Mabee Farms, the change of seasons is celebrated with live music, hayrides, hot apple cider, activities for the whole family and fall dishes. Dates vary from year to year, so check the dates for the year in question.
The digital Schenectady Sips Pass includes a beer or spirits tasting, a pint or a craft cocktail at participating partners. Participating partners may change, so it’s worth checking the current selection before your visit. Via Aquarium’s educational programs let groups explore and learn about live animals such as marine invertebrates, sharks and reptiles. Participation is subject to the aquarium’s booking process.
