A reconstructed fort, a rare inland pine barrens ecosystem and museums with very different focuses give Oneida a varied travel profile. When planning a stay, visitors can first choose among history, nature, art and regional topics. The places mentioned differ not only in their subject matter, but also in whether they focus on a reconstructed site, landscape features, exhibitions or interactive interpretation.

History in Rome and Oriskany

Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome was reconstructed in 1976 and largely reflects the appearance of the period of the American Revolutionary War. The visitor center contains a museum area, where living history programs are offered. The reconstructed site, exhibition and interpretive programs thus provide different ways to explore history.

Another historical landmark is the Battle of Oriskany, fought on August 6, 1777. It is considered a significant turning point in the American Revolutionary War and is described as one of its bloodiest battles. The dates mark different milestones: 1777 refers to the battle, while 1976 is the year the fort was reconstructed.

Landscapes by the lake and inland

Verona Beach State Park lies on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake and encompasses lake, stream, marsh and floodplain forest habitats. The park is shaped not only by its location along the shore: its range of habitat types is also part of its landscape. Delta Lake State Park features a different landform. It lies on a wooded, mostly flat peninsula that extends into the Delta Reservoir. Comparing the landscapes, visitors will find a variety of named habitats at Verona Beach, while the peninsula and its wooded character define Delta Lake.

Rome Sand Plains Unique Area is a rare inland pine barrens ecosystem with sand dunes, wetlands and forest. Grassland birds, owls and woodpeckers can be found there. The area is also included in the New York State Birding Trail route for Oneida County. For birdwatchers, both the variety of habitats and the bird groups mentioned are central features.

Museums and regional history

Canastota Canal Town Museum presents the history of the Erie Canal, along with local folklore and local history, across two floors. Located next to the Old Erie Canal, it displays authentic artifacts, art and other exhibitions about Canastota’s contributions to the canal, commerce, industry and agriculture. Canal history and local topics are brought together in one exhibition. Old Erie Canal State Park refers to a separate section: it encompasses 36 miles of the 363-mile-long Old Erie Canal and is designated a National Recreational Trail. The two distances distinguish the park section from the entire canal.
