The La Chute River Trail begins just outside the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum and follows the river for a quarter of a mile. Along the way, it explains local hydropower, papermaking, geology and ecology. This short trail brings together natural and regional history; other themes in Essex range from Olympic memorabilia to industrial and everyday history.

Museums and Historical Perspectives

The Lake Placid Olympic Museum displays Olympic torches, pins, uniforms and equipment. Its focus is on the Winter Olympic Games hosted by Lake Placid in 1932 and 1980. The collection connects tangible objects with two years of hosting the Games and a clearly defined chapter in sports history.

The “Worked/Wild” exhibition at the Adirondack History Museum introduces people from Essex County through complex themes and competing perspectives on life in the Adirondacks. The North Star Underground Railroad Museum uses exhibits and videos to highlight little-known stories of success from the Underground Railroad. The permanent exhibition “Dreaming of Timbuctoo” at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site offers another perspective on Adirondack history. It explores the farming community Gerrit Smith established for Black families.

The Crown Point State Historic Site preserves the ruins of two fortifications from the colonial wars between Britain and France and shares their history. At the Penfield Homestead Museum, a homestead dating to around 1825 takes center stage. The rooms on the ground floor illustrate life in the early 19th century and the history of Crown Point.

Work, Everyday Life and Industrial History

The 1812 Homestead & Farm Museum is a 130-acre open-air museum focused on everyday history. It is located on the site of a 19th-century inn and pioneer homestead near Long Pond. Visitors can try hands-on historic activities there: baking on a hearth, blacksmithing, candle dipping, shingle making, animal care and gardening. Check the demonstration schedule before your trip. The General Burgoyne’s Wagon Trail runs opposite the homestead; interpretive signs explain General Burgoyne and his troops’ passage through the Willsboro area in 1777.

Industrial history has its own sites, too. The Railroad and Mining Heritage Park includes historic structures from the Witherbee-Sherman Mining Company’s waterfront complex. The Iron Center Museum documents the local iron ore industry, which flourished from 1820 to 1971, its effects on working life, and the preparation, processing and transportation of iron ore. The Penfield Homestead Museum also offers a historic tour of the Crown Point Iron Company’s production complex.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Carillon Battlefield Hiking Trail is accessible from June through October; access is included with general admission to Fort Ticonderoga. Check seasonal access before you arrive. The Brewster Peninsula Trails are a year-round destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, trail running, hiking, picnicking and fishing. These outdoor activities complement the historic exhibitions and sites.

The Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway offers a different measure of distance: from the Toll House, the road climbs more than 2,300 feet over five miles. The Penfield Homestead Museum, together with Champlain Area Trails, also offers a nature walk at Penfield Pond and along Putnam Creek. The trails mentioned have different focuses: the La Chute River Trail emphasizes explanations of nature and regional work, while the walk at Penfield Pond and Putnam Creek is designed as a nature experience.

Agriculture and Regional Information

Agriculture is another theme to explore in Essex. Adirondack Harvest is a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County. It serves farmers and producers in the North Country as a marketing platform and provides information for residents and visitors. For trip planning, this look at regional agriculture adds another local theme alongside the museums, historic sites and outdoor activities.
