The Madison River connects world-renowned trout fishing with a variety of recreational opportunities in Madison County. At the same time, the region’s history stretches from Virginia City, once the capital of the Montana Territory, to museums and exhibits that present different chapters of the past. You can plan your trip around rivers and outdoor activities, or spend more time exploring historic places and their collections.

Rivers, Fishing and Paddling

The upper Madison River above Ennis Lake is known among fly-fishing enthusiasts as the “50-mile riffle.” The stretch is considered a major fishing destination for visitors from around the world. Beaverhead, Big Hole, Jefferson and Ruby rivers are also among the major rivers in Madison County; the county’s waterways are used for fishing and other recreational activities. The Ruby River rises in the county and is a tributary of the Missouri River.

Rafting and paddling on the Jefferson River are suitable for beginners, except during high water in spring. This limitation is important to bear in mind if you plan to include paddling in your itinerary. The Madison-Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area is about 35 miles south of Ennis and provides public access to fishing on the upper Madison River. This means a stay can offer several different focuses: a well-known stretch of river for fly-fishers, fishing access on the upper Madison, and the paddling and rafting opportunities described for the Jefferson River.

Virginia City and Nevada City

Virginia City is a National Historic Landmark and a destination in Madison County. From 1865 to 1875, it was the capital of the Montana Territory. Virginia City and Nevada City can be explored as open-air museums, with historic markers and opportunities for self-guided tours. The Alder Gulch Shortline Railroad connects the two towns, adding its own distinctive element to an exploration of their history.

In Virginia City, the Historic Fire Truck Tours take visitors on a narrated 35-minute ride along Main Street to Boot Hill. Operations may vary by season. The living-history presentations in Nevada City are also seasonal: they take place on Saturdays and Sundays between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend; the schedule may change from year to year. If either experience is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.

The Nevada City Old Town Museum and Music Hall comprises one hundred buildings dating from 1863 to the early 20th century. Its collection includes Old West artifacts and is one of the largest collections of its kind outside the Smithsonian Institution. The buildings, spanning several decades, and the collection give a visit a different focus from Virginia City’s political history: here, the emphasis is on the material heritage of the Old West and historic architecture.

Museums and Historic Insights

At the Madison County Lewis & Clark Interpretive Park in Twin Bridges, information panels, a partially built dugout canoe, a symbolic tipi and an interactive animal-tracks exhibit offer different ways to engage with history. The park focuses on the five days the Corps of Discovery spent in the area and is an officially certified site on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. The exhibit combines the expedition’s historical context with illustrative objects and an activity centered on animal tracks.

The Twin Bridges Historical Association Museum preserves and displays objects related to local history, Indigenous culture, and the history of pioneers, mining and agriculture. Its renovated building houses historic artifacts and documents. The Madison Valley History Museum offers another perspective on the past of the Madison Valley, focusing on the valley’s Western history and culture. Those who want to compare several cultural and historical topics will find a range of distinct focuses: Virginia City’s territorial history, Nevada City’s buildings and collection, and local and regional history at the museums and interpretive park.

A Visit with a Focus of Your Own

Fly-fishing, paddling and historic places appeal to different travel interests, and conditions vary too, such as the seasonal programs in Nevada City or the warning about high water on the Jefferson River in spring. As you plan your trip, consider whether you want to devote most of your time to rivers and fishing or to historic places and museums. Then look for a hotel that suits your plans, and consider its location in relation to the activities you have in mind.
