Wibaux County brings together architectural history, a museum complex with park grounds, and seasonal activities. Wibaux offers a particularly diverse range of historical themes: church architecture, commercial architecture, and the history of the open-range cattle industry offer different points of interest for a stay. The County Fair and guided hunts each have their own timing, which plays a role in planning a trip.

Church, Commercial District, and Wibaux House

St. Peter’s Catholic Church was built in 1895 and enlarged in 1938. During the expansion, the exterior walls were clad in scoria, a type of volcanic rock common in the region’s Badlands. The National Register of Historic Places describes the church as a unique adaptation of a simple vernacular design. Its original construction and a later structural alteration stand alongside the distinctive choice of a locally common material.

The Wibaux Commercial Historic District also tells the story of an economic shift: ranching gave way to agricultural trade. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Closely grouped one- and two-story brick buildings, constructed between 1905 and 1917, replaced most of the frame buildings. Their architecture features transitional elements between Classical Revival and the more modern Prairie School style. Here, the development can be viewed through several aspects at once: building materials, building height, and changes in commercial styles.

The Wibaux House offers a different perspective. Built in 1892 as Pierre Wibaux’s office building, it is a substantial Victorian-era house. As a testament to European capital in the open-range cattle industry, it is considered to be of statewide significance. Other buildings add to the historical picture: the Woodburn Building was built in 1917; the Masonic Temple was on its upper floor. The Clark Hardware Company building was constructed in 1916 as a one-story brick-and-stucco structure. The Smith Saloon is considered an outstanding example of early 20th-century commercial architecture.

Museum Complex and Park in Wibaux

The Wibaux Museum Complex is located in downtown Wibaux at 112 East Orgain Avenue. Wibaux Park surrounds the museum complex. Visitors can walk along Beaver Creek and have a picnic on the grounds. The park garden also features a grotto made of local rocks such as agate, petrified wood, and lava.

The Pierre Wibaux Museum is housed in an office building erected by Pierre Wibaux and Henry Boice in 1892. It contains several antiques that belonged to Pierre Wibaux and his wife, Mary Ellen (Cooper) Wibaux. The park grounds, grotto, and collection offer different perspectives on the place, from the rocks used in the grotto to the Wibaux family’s personal belongings.
