Wide-open landscapes, ranching history, and cultural sites shape Judith Basin County in central Montana, between Great Falls and Lewistown. Grassland and wheat fields, along with four mountain ranges—the Little Belt Mountains, Snowy’s, Highwoods, and Judith’s—define the county. The Lewis & Clark National Forest also covers 295,000 acres in Judith Basin County. Here, landscape and history are equally central: explore the natural surroundings through designated themes and recreational opportunities, while museums, historic sites, and the art of Charlie Russell offer glimpses into the past.

Landscape and Outdoor Activities

Recreational activities such as mountain biking are supported in the Lewis & Clark National Forest within the county. The Judith River Wildlife Management Area covers 9,408 acres and is managed for wintering elk, other wildlife, and public recreation. Winter is considered the best time to see elk and deer there. At the same time, the area is closed to recreational activities from December 1 through May 15. Keep this seasonal restriction in mind when planning and check the notices before your visit.

The extent of the publicly used area at Ackley Reservoir is also clearly defined: For many years, a portion of the reservoir has been managed and made available to the public by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks as Ackley State Park. Dry Wolf Campground is also in the county. The wider Judith Basin County area offers access to the mountains, as well as hiking, motorcycle, ATV, and horseback riding trails. These places offer different ways to plan a trip focused on nature and outdoor activities.

Ranching Heritage and History Along the Route

The C.M. Russell Auto Tour presents the history of the Judith Basin through the art of Charlie Russell. Russell arrived in the Judith Basin in 1880 and lived and worked there for ten years. The tour follows US Highway 87 and designated roads through Judith Basin County and includes 25 interpretive stops. It brings history and art together along a defined route.

Other historic places tell the story of the region’s transformation. Meadowbrook Stock Farm represents the transition from open-range cattle and sheep ranching to small agricultural communities whose development depended on rail transport. Wood Lawn Farm symbolizes the transformation of the Judith Basin from open prairie landscapes to land used for farming and ranching. At Judith River Ranger Station, the early U.S. Forest Service’s approach to conservation can be seen in the station’s function and design; it was completed in 1908.

Museums, Art, and Local Traditions

The Judith Basin County Museum opened in 1967. Exhibits include historic photographs, clothing worn by early settlers, history books, and other artifacts. The Utica Museum has its own focus: its collections include dishes, clothing, furniture, tools, and leather goods from the Homestead era. The museum has also published two books about the history of Utica and its residents, and preserves photographs and articles about local settlers.

At the Steven E. Lillegard Studio and Foundry, visitors can see work in progress and the different stages of the bronze-casting process. The studio has offered award-winning bronze sculptures since 1981. Art enthusiasts can get a glimpse of how the work is created there, while the museum collections bring everyday objects and keepsakes from earlier ways of life into focus.
