Carbon County combines sweeping mountain views with hiking, wildlife watching and a rich local history. Several of these themes come together in Red Lodge: The city lies in the Beartooth Mountains and is surrounded by the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Smaller towns also have their own character—from a museum in a former railroad depot to gateways into the mountain landscape.

Mountain Views and Trails

The Beartooth Highway offers sweeping views of snow-capped mountains and panoramic vistas of hundreds of high-altitude alpine lakes. The drive is a scenic experience centered on views of mountains and lakes. If you’d rather explore on foot, the East Rosebud Trail (# 15), also known as “The Beaten Path,” offers another way to experience the area: The trail leads 16 miles to Fossil Lake.

The towns of Boyd and Bridger are also associated with different places to visit. Boyd is a gateway to the reservoir at Cooney State Park, which is used for fishing, boating and camping. Bridger is a gateway to the Pryor Mountains, home to a herd of wild mustangs. Outdoor activities here range from spending time on the water to exploring a landscape known for its wild horses.

At Red Lodge Mountain, 70 runs spread across two mountains. The terrain includes steep slopes and open forest glades, as well as couloirs, groomed runs and gentle descents. The range of terrain features defines the area’s character, without any single type of run dominating the selection.

The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary invites visitors to see rescued animals from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. These include bears, cats, foxes and birds of prey, as well as other animal groups. Visitor rules vary by season, so it’s best to check them before your trip.

Red Lodge and Getting Around the Area

Billings, Montana, and Cody, Wyoming, are useful reference points when traveling to Red Lodge: The drive from either place to Red Lodge is about 60 miles. Within the city, most attractions are an easy walk from downtown.

When planning your trip, you can start by considering which kind of outing interests you most: a scenic drive, a longer trail, activities at the reservoir or wildlife watching.

Museums, Theater and Local History

The Carbon County Historical Society and Museum is housed in the first Labor Temple built in Montana. The three-story brick building stands at the entrance to Red Lodge’s historic business district. The museum features interactive exhibits on coal and hard-rock mining, as well as the Greenough and Linderman family rodeo collection.

In Fromberg, the Clarks Fork Valley Museum is housed in one of the last rural Class 4 railroad depots in the United States. The museum grounds also include the Historic Homesteader’s Cabin, which dates from the 1890s. The depot and cabin each offer a tangible connection to local history.

The Roman Theater is also part of Red Lodge’s cultural history: It is considered the oldest continuously operating theater in Montana and hosts film screenings and other events. The program may change. The Red Lodge Rodeo dates back to the late 1890s. Two historical dates are worth distinguishing for the Festival of Nations: Its roots go back to the 1920s, but the first official celebration took place in 1951.

Art, Events and Local Products

The Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is located in the historic Rocky Fork & Cooke City Railway depot next to Lions Park. It hosts rotating exhibitions and workshops. The Guild also coordinates the Labor Day Arts Fair, held in Lions Park. At the Red Lodge Art Walk, visitors can meet guest artists and see their work at selected venues. The Art Walk takes place on the second Saturday of each month from May through October; participating venues may vary. Check the current calendar for your travel dates.

The Red Lodge Farmers Market offers fresh produce, vegetable seedlings, baked goods, locally raised beef and flowers; vendors’ offerings may vary. The 2026 Red Lodge Ales Oktoberfest program includes food, music, beer and games. For later editions, check the event details before your trip.

The different themes make it easy to plan around your interests: The highway and trail put scenery and outdoor activity front and center, while museums, theater and art events reveal other sides of the county. First decide which of these experiences you want to define your trip, then plan the rest around it.
