Pondera County stretches from the high plains in the east to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the west. The Marias River forms part of the northern boundary; Pondera County also includes the watersheds of Two Medicine, the Milk River, and Birch Creek. Part of the Blackfeet Reservation lies in the northwest of the county. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether waterscapes, river activities, or the history of Conrad and Valier will be the focus of your trip.

Lake Frances: Lake, Trails, and Mountain Views

Fed by mountain waters, Lake Frances offers views of the Rocky Mountains. Hiking and biking trails by the lake also provide views of the Rocky Mountain Front. A colony of great egrets is located on a nearby island in Lake Frances. The lake offers activities year-round; in summer, shore and boat fishing for perch, pike, and walleye are popular. Seasonal conditions can vary. The year-round recreation information and the seasonal description of fishing therefore offer different planning guidelines: you can consider the lake a destination for various activities and plan on fishing especially for a summer visit.

River Activities on the Marias River

At normal water levels, the Marias River is a Class I river along its entire length and is suitable for beginners. However, suitability for boating depends on flow conditions. This assessment is therefore explicitly tied to water levels. Public hunting for all species except deer is open in the Marias River Wildlife Management Area. Hunting seasons and access rules can change; check current information before your visit.

Fishing and Scenery at Tiber Dam-Lake Elwell

Tiber Dam-Lake Elwell offers excellent year-round fishing for pike, sauger, native trout, burbot, perch, and other species. Fishing conditions and regulations can change. There is also a marina at the lake, whose seasonal operations may vary. The landscape includes wind-sculpted sandstone formations. Below Tiber Dam, an area along the Marias River is designated for birdwatching. Several distinct interests come together here: fishing, a marina, striking rock formations, and birdwatching. When planning, you can decide between spending your time by the water or taking in the scenery and birdlife.

Conrad, Valier, and Whoop-Up Trail Days

The annual Whoop-Up Trail Days usually takes place on the first weekend in June in Conrad; dates vary from year to year. The festival includes a two-day rodeo at the Conrad Rodeo Grounds. It began in 1939 as a “Days of 49”-style celebration, featuring a colorful western-themed parade and gambling. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

Pondera County’s building history can also be seen at specific sites. Conrad City Hall is the oldest surviving government building in the county. Valier Public School is an excellent example of stone architecture and was designed by the prominent Montana architect George H. Shanley of Great Falls. Its significance is also tied to Valier’s early development. In Conrad, visitors can explore the history of a surviving government building and the festival tradition, while the school in Valier brings together architecture and local history.
