Wicomico: Discover Nature, Culture and Events
Accommodation in Wicomico
Free open-house-style tours are offered at Poplar Hill Mansion on Fridays and Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00. Additional tours are available by appointment on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Check the schedule before you arrive. Nature, museums and events offer more ways to plan your trip to Wicomico.
Nature and Trails
Pemberton Historical Park covers 262 acres of nature and wildlife. Its seven trails are designed for walking and hiking and total 4.5 miles. Both the number of trails and their combined length provide useful reference points for planning.
Ellis Bay WMA in southwest Wicomico County offers a different landscape: the 3,200-acre area along Muddy Hole Road is a marsh and wooded wetland. While the trail network is a key feature of Pemberton Historical Park, the size and wetland character define Ellis Bay WMA. In all, Wicomico County has more than 50 parks and facilities for outdoor activities.
Museums and Wildlife
The Franklin P. Perdue Museum is one of the few university-affiliated museums in the United States focused on business decisions, primary sources and interpretive exhibits. The Nabb Research Center has a different focus: it preserves more than 6,000 artifacts related to the history of Delmarva, Salisbury University and archival collections. The two institutions offer different ways to explore history and collection topics.
Admission to the Salisbury Zoo is free. Its naturalistic habitats are home to animals from North America, South America and Australia. This makes the zoo another destination for visitors interested in animals and their diverse habitats.
Festivals and Events
The Wicomico County Fair is still held every August at WinterPlace Park. The Maryland Folk Festival is a free, large-scale, three-day outdoor festival in downtown Salisbury that celebrates American culture. Traditional musicians, dancers and craftspeople take part in performances, workshops and demonstrations. Since event details can change, check the latest dates and information before your trip.
The Good Beer Festival features unlimited craft beer tastings, along with music, games and food. Vendors also offer handcrafted and specialty goods. With its mix of tastings, entertainment and goods for sale, the festival differs from the Folk Festival's cultural performances.
Local Flavors and History
The Salisbury Foodie Tour takes you on foot between several restaurants in downtown Salisbury. There is a tasting at each stop, and participants also learn about Salisbury and its history. Bordeleau Vineyards & Winery is located on Wicomico Creek and offers free tours. Tastings are subject to a fee—a useful distinction to keep in mind when planning to visit both.
Cycling and Baseball
The Sea Gull Century starts and finishes on the campus of Salisbury University. You can choose between two routes of 100 and 65 miles, making it easy to compare the distances offered. Baseball is another sport featured here: Perdue Stadium is home to Shorebirds baseball in Salisbury. The Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame showcases Eastern Shore legends, including Jimmie Fox, Frank “Home Run” Baker and Julius “Judy” Johnson.
