Garrett County combines museums and historic sites with lakes and activities that take on different emphasis depending on the season. When planning your stay, it’s worth starting with your interests: Would you like culture to take center stage, spend time by the water, or plan for winter sports? Opening hours, season, and weather conditions each play a different role.

Museums, Barn Quilt Trail, and Agriculture

The Garrett County Historical Society preserves and shares the county’s history in two museums featuring a variety of exhibits and artifacts. The society’s History Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is closed on holidays. Check these opening hours again before you arrive if you are planning to make a museum visit a firm part of your itinerary.

The Barn Quilt Trail is also among the county’s cultural attractions: Garrett County was the first county in Maryland to have such a trail. The Garrett County Agriculture Fair offers a different focus. Held annually, it showcases local agriculture as well as contributions from local makers, gardeners, photographers, and others with a range of skills. If you want to include the fair in your travel plans, check the dates for that year’s event.

Historic Sites and Their Significance

Fort Alice was built in 1861 to protect a strategically important railroad crossing over the Youghiogheny River. Its history is therefore directly tied to the importance of that crossing at the time. The Casselman River Bridge, built in 1813, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The area around the bridge is currently closed temporarily; check its current status before planning a visit. This helps distinguish the site’s historic significance from current visitor conditions.

Deep Creek Lake and Activities on the Water

Deep Creek Lake was created in 1925 by the Youghiogheny Hydro Electric Corporation to harness the water power of Deep Creek. Today, visitors can go boating, fishing, kayaking, and swimming, as well as enjoy other water sports on the lake. Deep Creek Lake State Park also has a public boat ramp; its availability depends on the weather. If a boat trip is part of your plans, keep in mind the practical difference between the activities generally available on the lake and the weather-dependent use of the ramp.

Parks and Seasonal Highlights

Herrington Manor State Park covers 365 acres and includes a 53-acre lake. Swimming and boating are available there, including rowboats, canoes, and pedal boats. In winter, the park offers cross-country ski trails and ski rentals; winter use depends on seasonal conditions and current park operations.

New Germany State Park has a different scale and landscape setting: its lake covers 13 acres, and the park is located on the grounds of a once-prosperous milling center in Savage River State Forest. The trails are used for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. This seasonal contrast can help with planning: in summer, you can focus on hiking trails and activities on the water, while in winter, cross-country skiing is an option, provided conditions and operations allow.

Wisp Resort also offers a dedicated focus on winter sports. It has nearly 40 runs with varied terrain, a tubing park, a terrain park, and a beginner ski area. Winter operations depend on seasonal conditions. These offerings are clearly distinct from the park trails, which are used for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter.

If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Garrett County, use your planned activities as a guide for your trip: museum visits have specific opening hours, while some water and winter activities depend on the weather, the season, or current operations. Check the relevant conditions before you arrive, then choose the focus of your stay based on which of these experiences matters most to you.
