Charles County can be explored through two distinct interests: the history of the early United States and trails through river landscapes and woodland. Historic Port Tobacco Village, the Thomas Stone National Historic Site, and the Indian Head Rail Trail and Friendship Farm Park give you specific starting points for planning. The places differ in their historical focus, landscape, and trail length. This lets you tailor your outings to what you would like to experience during your stay. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether cultural history or outdoor activities should define your stay.

History in Port Tobacco and Around Thomas Stone

Thomas Stone signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, along with 55 others. At the Thomas Stone National Historic Site, an interpretive audio tour offers a glimpse into Stone’s world in 1775. This reference to the past leads from the world described for the previous year to the political event of 1776. Since the availability of the audio tour may change, check before your visit to see whether it is currently offered.

Historic Port Tobacco Village was settled in the 17th century. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, Historic Port Tobacco developed into one of Maryland’s largest international seaports. You can explore the village on your own or as part of a tour of the Port Tobacco Courthouse, Stagg Hall, and Burch House. Stagg Hall was likely built around 1766 for Barnes and Ridgate as the headquarters of their trading company. This also makes it possible to connect your visit to the village with a specific example of the trade history of that time.

The African American Heritage House serves as a museum and educational center and houses artifacts related to the contributions of African Americans from the region and across the country. Except during special public events, the house is open by appointment only. Plan your visit with an appointment.

The McConchie One Room School House now serves as a living museum on the grounds of the Charles County Fairgrounds. Access may vary during special events; keep this in mind when planning your visit.

Trails, Woodland, and Water

The Indian Head Rail Trail is 13 miles long and connects the town of Indian Head with Route 301 in White Plains. It runs through the Mattawoman Creek valley. For planning purposes, the trail offers both two named reference points and a connection to the river valley landscape. Friendship Farm Park offers a different perspective: from there, you can enjoy a view of Nanjemoy Creek.

At Friendship Farm Park, a recreational trail more than seven miles long provides public access to 382 acres of woodland and land occasionally used for agriculture. The view and the trail offer different perspectives on the park: the creek view draws attention to the water, while the trail provides access to the woodland and agricultural land described here. Together with the Indian Head Rail Trail, these offer two trails of different lengths and landscape settings.

Mallows Bay adds a maritime dimension to these themes. The bay is a national marine sanctuary with more than 100 abandoned steamships and other vessels. Together with the historic sites, it illustrates the range of history and landscapes you can consider when planning a stay in Charles County.
