Port Tobacco Village’s local history takes center stage, with international trade, education, and public institutions offering different ways to explore the past. Before the American Revolution, Port Tobacco developed into one of Maryland’s largest international seaports. The schoolhouse, Courthouse, Stagg Hall, and museum collections each offer a different focus. During your visit, you can choose between exploring independently, taking a tour of historic buildings, and individual offerings such as an audio tour.

Trade and Historic Buildings

Stagg Hall was built around 1766 for Barnes and Ridgate as the headquarters of their trading business. A remarkably large portion of the original interior and exterior features has been preserved. This makes it possible to consider the building’s former role as a business headquarters and its architecture together, without losing sight of its historic connection to trade.

The Port Tobacco Courthouse is a reconstruction of the 1819 courthouse. It serves as a museum and is operated by the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco. Along with Stagg Hall and Burch House, it is one of the three sites visited on a tour of historic Port Tobacco Village. If you prefer to explore independently, you can also visit the historic village on your own.

For the 2026 season, tours of Stagg Hall are offered Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., March through December, as well as by special arrangement. If you plan to schedule your visit around a tour, check the hours before you travel.

School History, Church, and Agriculture

The Port Tobacco One-Room Schoolhouse dates to around 1876 and operated for 77 years. The schoolhouse thus combines a specific construction date with its long use as a school. It is accessible and comfortably accommodates up to 25 people. Before your visit, it is best to confirm current accessibility and the facility’s condition.

The historic St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church is an active Roman Catholic parish and continues to be supported and staffed by the Jesuits. The Agricultural Heritage Museum offers a different focus: its exhibits include a historic tobacco barn, a corn crib, and agricultural artifacts. In this way, religious community life and agricultural history sit alongside the themes of trade and public institutions.

Audio Tour and Riverfront

The Thomas Stone National Historic Site offers an audio tour exploring Thomas Stone’s world in 1775. This offering complements the history of the buildings and the village with a specific look at Thomas Stone’s time. Since the audio tour’s availability may change, check before your visit whether it will be offered on your planned date.

Chapel Point State Park has a waterfront area along the Port Tobacco River. This river is a tributary of the Potomac River.
