Richland: Lake, Golf and Historic Architecture
Accommodation in Richland
The artificial lake at Poverty Point Reservoir State Park covers 2,700 acres and is the park’s focal point. The park offers a variety of water sports on the lake. Golf and historic buildings add other areas of interest. As you plan, consider whether you are especially interested in water activities, golf, or architectural history.
Lake and Water Sports
The park’s North Marina Complex has a swimming beach, a boat launch, a marina with 48 covered slips, a snack area, a fishing pier, and a fish-cleaning station. A range of facilities is located in the same complex. The number of covered slips is a specific point of reference for anyone interested in the park’s maritime offerings.
A nature trail runs through the park along an arm of Bayou Macon. So, in addition to the large artificial lake, the area’s landscape includes a river arm and a trail through nature. Water sports and the nature trail offer different ways to shape the focus of your stay.
Golf as a Distinct Focus
Black Bear Golf Club is part of Louisiana’s Audubon Golf Trail. Its specific features include four sets of tees and a full practice facility. Together with its place on the Golf Trail, these details give golf a distinct place among Richland’s travel themes.
Historic Buildings and Townscape
The Downtown Delhi Historic District comprises 23 buildings and nearly two blocks of commercial buildings built in a continuous row. They are located along First Street and face the railroad line. The townscape is therefore shaped by more than just one building: the continuous stretch of commercial buildings and their orientation are also part of the district’s architectural character.
By contrast, the Trio Plantation House centers on a single residence. It is a one-story, timber-frame house in the Greek Revival style, built in 1869. The house lies north of Rayville, across from the meandering Boeuf River. Its style, year of construction, and location give the building a distinctive profile within the area’s architectural history.
The Nonnie Roark Rhymes Memorial Library is a small, squat-looking, one-story brick building dating from 1928. The Miles-Hanna House, in turn, is a one-story timber-frame house built in 1892, with Queen Anne styling and Eastlake details. It retains its original defining features inside and out and is a very rare surviving example of the Queen Anne Revival and Eastlake styles. Compared with the Trio Plantation House, both houses share one-story timber-frame construction, but differ in their year of construction and architectural style.
River Landscapes and Wildlife Encounters
The Floy Ward McElroy Wildlife Management Area includes oxbow lakes and backwater areas along the Boeuf River. The river borders the area for 4 miles. The features described here distinguish this river landscape from the artificial lake at Poverty Point Reservoir State Park.
Wild Country Safari Park aims to bring the public close to wildlife and combine visits with information about the animals kept there, as well as entertainment. Before visiting, check whether the park is currently open to visitors and what offerings are available.
