Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge shapes the natural side of Concordia Parish: it spans 14,668 acres between Ferriday and Monterey. Historic cotton buildings, musical history, and destinations along the Mississippi add other highlights to a trip through the parish.

Bottomland Forest, River Route, and Mounds

The refuge’s bottomland forest provides habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. These include the Louisiana black bear, which remained on the endangered species list until 2016. The refuge also has several miles of hiking trails—a concrete point of interest for anyone interested in the landscape and hiking.

The Lower Mississippi River Water Trail begins near Vidalia and runs through the Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area and the Red River National Wildlife Refuge. The route includes views of the riverbanks and access to thousands of acres of native flora. It therefore connects the river landscape with a glimpse of the region’s plant life.

DePrato Mounds offers a different landscape feature: the complex includes five domed mounds on about four acres and lies east of the confluence of Black Bayou and Bayou Cocodrie. The specific number and shape of the mounds, and their location at the confluence, make the site a tangible archaeological landscape.

Cotton History and Music

Frogmore Cotton Plantation & Gins has authentic historic buildings dating from 1790 to 1890. A guided tour compares historic cotton production and ginning with today’s computer-assisted farming and ginning. Ginning separates cotton fibers from the seeds. The tour therefore covers both earlier production and modern methods. Groups can pick cotton there from July through April.

The Delta Music Museum in Ferriday is free and open to the public. It is the first place in Louisiana to be designated on the Mississippi Blues Trail. For music enthusiasts, the museum combines public access with a direct connection to the state’s blues tradition.

The Sidney A. Murray, Jr. Hydroelectric Museum is also located in the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center. Its location in the conference and convention center makes it easy to find.

Festival and Visiting Hours

The Jim Bowie Festival takes place every September along the banks of the Mississippi, near the site of the 1827 sandbar fight by Vidalia. If you’re planning to attend the festival, check the specific event dates before your trip.

In Vidalia, 1827 Spirits operates a craft micro-distillery with a tasting room. Visitors can sample its offerings there. The tasting room at 1622 Carter Street is open Thursday through Saturday, from 12 to 5 p.m. Since opening hours can change, check them before your visit.

These themes offer different perspectives on Concordia Parish, without requiring you to limit your trip to just one kind of experience.
