Cumberland Falls forms a 125-foot curtain of water that plunges into a boulder-strewn gorge. During a full moon, a moonbow may be visible there. Moonlight and clear conditions must come together for this—a natural phenomenon whose possible appearance depends on specific circumstances.

Trails of varying lengths

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park has 17 miles of hiking trails. Two named routes differ considerably in length and destination: Moonbow Trail No. 1 is 10.8 miles long and runs from Cumberland Falls to the mouth of the Laurel River. Eagle Falls Trail is 1.8 miles long and is the only trail leading to Eagle Falls. When comparing trails, you can use the stated distances and endpoints as a guide.

Other activities offer different experiences. The park offers guided 45-minute horseback rides for riders ages six and up. Since availability and seasonal schedules may change, it’s a good idea to check current dates in advance. At the gemstone sluice, visitors can wash raw material and search for gemstones and fossils; seasonal operations may vary.

Activities on and around the water

For river trips, whether you’re above or below Cumberland Falls makes a difference: guided whitewater rafting trips are offered below the falls, including trips for families and beginners. Above the falls, unguided canoe and kayak trips are available. The options therefore differ both in their location relative to the falls and in whether they’re guided. Check provider schedules and river conditions before making plans.

There are several ways to fish at Laurel River Lake. Fish species include largemouth, smallmouth, and Kentucky bass, rainbow trout, walleye, sunfish, and catfish. Fishing regulations and license requirements may change, so check the current rules before fishing. Scuba diving is permitted in the lake. Check the safety rules and designated areas before your visit.

No boats of any kind are allowed at Spillway Beach on Laurel River Lake. If you’re planning to swim, check the safety rules beforehand. Laurel Lake is a separate area: pontoon boats, runabouts, and houseboats are available to rent nearby. Rental offerings and provider details may change, so confirm availability before planning.
