Fitchburg Furnace is the only iron furnace of its kind in the Western Hemisphere; two side-by-side chimneys give it its distinctive shape. Estill County combines this industrial heritage with community cultural projects and local festivals.

Appalachian Landscape and Roads

Estill County lies in the gently rolling foothills of the Appalachians, with the Kentucky River running through the county. Lily Mountain Nature Preserve encompasses more than 500 acres of natural land. The ridge trail at Lily Mountain offers views of Rocky’s Roost. Estill County also promotes scenic roads for trips by car, motorcycle or bicycle. This offers a range of landscapes to focus on when planning a trip: a named overlook along the ridge trail and a drive along scenic roads.

Industrial History and Courthouse

Estill Steam Furnace is a stone-built chimney constructed by Thomas Deye Owings in 1830. In 1872, Estill Steam Furnace produced a total of 1,967 tons of iron. Estill Springs operated as a spa from 1814 until the hotel burned down in 1924. The historic Estill County Courthouse stands on Courthouse Square in Irvine, Kentucky; it was built with stone from the county and the labor of local residents. Industrial construction and production history, the former use as a spa, and the courthouse’s local origins thus stand alongside one another as distinct historical themes.

Quilt Trail and Community

The Estill County Quilt Trail grew into a countywide project. Residents helped select the quilt patterns and barn locations. Visitors can look for local heritage along rural highways and scenic back roads. Community involvement is therefore just as much a part of the trail as the search for these cultural motifs. Many locations are on private property. Unless otherwise indicated, view the patterns from public roads and follow the visitor guidance at each location. This roadside perspective is important when planning a visit because many locations are on private property.

Festivals with Distinctive Themes

Mountain Mushroom Festival

The annual Mountain Mushroom Festival celebrates Appalachian culture. Morels, Kentucky agate and crafts are among its cultural touchstones, as are Daniel Boone National Forest, the Kentucky River and the mountains. The program includes exhibits, hands-on activities and demonstrations, as well as stages featuring storytelling and culinary programs. The festival offers a free weekend of activities and entertainment. Dates may vary and program details may change; check both before planning your trip.

Ravenna Railroad Festival

The Ravenna Railroad Festival celebrates Ravenna’s railroad heritage and includes miniature train rides and railroad exhibits. The two festivals offer distinct cultural themes: Appalachian culture at the Mountain Mushroom Festival and railroad heritage at the Ravenna Railroad Festival. You can plan your festival visit according to the cultural focus you prefer.
