The karst landscape, caves and Green River shape the travel experience in Hart County. Beneath Horse Cave, water flows through Hidden River Cave and resurfaces as springs along the river. Activities on the water center on paddling routes and nature watching; Horse Cave and Munfordville offer museums, historic sites and other experiences.

Green River: Mussels, Cliffs and Trails by the Water

The karst landscape along the Green River contributes to some of the highest water quality in Kentucky. The river is home to 70 mussel species, including species found only in this river system. The landscape along the water is also varied: Two boat trips pass river cliffs and islands, go through rapids and gentle riffles, and travel alongside long, deep pools.

One specifically described paddling route runs 4 miles from Harry Wilson Park to Thelma Stovall Park, also called Green River Park. It is considered an easy half-day trip. On foot, the 4.5-mile Jenny Wilson Byrd Memorial Trail connects the same two parks. This gives you two different ways to travel between the parks: a trip on the river or a hike along the trail. The paddling section also passes Three Hundred Springs, a series of small waterfalls along a rock face. Their water volume may decrease during dry periods.

Cave Country and Experiences Near Horse Cave

Hidden River Cave brings the underground karst system to life: its water flows beneath Horse Cave and resurfaces as springs along the Green River. The cave is 2.2 miles east of Interstate 65 at Exit 58. The Horse Cave area also offers adventures in an undeveloped wild cave, ziplining and rappelling at the cave entrance. Confirm the availability of these activities before your trip.

The American Cave Museum focuses on caves, karst landscapes, groundwater and cave conservation. Admission is free; the self-guided tour covers two floors with interactive exhibits. Check visitor information before your visit. This makes it easy to pair a museum visit with a personal interest in the region’s geology.

In the Horse Cave area, Kentucky Down Under offers animal encounters: visitors can pet kangaroos and feed colorful lorikeets. Camp Corroboree introduces visitors to Australian Aboriginal culture with live demonstrations of instruments and tools, along with stories. The Horse Cave Heritage Festival takes place annually on the third weekend in September. The program includes a pedal pull, a sidewalk chalk art competition and a quilt show; the festival also features arts and crafts, games, classic cars and trucks, and business and food vendors. Dates and programs may change, so it’s worth confirming details before making plans.
