Allen County combines gently rolling rural landscapes with local history and activities on the water. Barren River Lake lies in the rural landscapes of Allen, Barren, and Monroe Counties in south-central Kentucky. Its dam is located 12 miles east of Scottsville on State Highway 252. In Scottsville, historical points of interest range from the water supply that influenced the choice of the county seat to the railroad, architecture, and local collections. Fishing and boating are among the activities available at the lake. When planning a hotel stay, you can consider whether Scottsville’s history or experiences at the lake should be the focus of your trip.

Scottsville: Water and Local History

Scottsville Public Spring provided an abundant water supply that influenced the choice of the town as county seat in 1816. In Scottsville’s Downtown Historic District, all but three buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Another testament to local history is the Scottsville Train Depot: built in 1886, it served as a passenger and freight depot for nearly 90 years. The original depot still stands a short distance along East Main Street from Scottsville’s historic center. The Allen County Historical Society Museum houses historically significant artifacts and memorabilia from Allen County.

At the Halcomb House, local history connects with the history of modern medicine. The original house was built in 1900. Worm-eaten chestnut logs form its exterior walls; chestnut wood was also used for the beams, paneling, and floors. The house and property were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. Its construction gives the house a distinctive architectural accent among Scottsville’s historic sites.

The former home and medical office of Dr. Pellie Graves also have a place in the county’s architectural history. The Allen County Historical Society acquired the building in 1991. The brick house, built in the Craftsman and Prairie styles, dates to 1909 or shortly before and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2001.

Memorial Sites, Park, and Events

The Allen County Rosenwald School is a 36 × 23-foot schoolhouse connected with the Black history of Scottsville and Allen County. The Allen County, Kentucky African American Heritage Council saved the building from deterioration. Scottsville is also featured in the “Take the Roads Less Traveled” heritage tourism brochure and map. This offers visitors different forms of cultural heritage in the area: historic buildings, memorial sites, and a map that places Scottsville within heritage tourism.

Scottsville hosts the annual Kentucky State Gospel Singing Convention. The LIVE at the Lyric Concert Series in Scottsville is also announced as an upcoming arts program. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates before you travel.

The nonprofit Dugas Park covers 346 acres and was established in Scottsville by the Dugas family in 2014. It offers trails and outdoor concerts. Alongside historical attractions, trails and an outdoor cultural program can also be part of your travel plans.

Barren River Lake: Landscape and Activities on the Water

Barren River Lake lies in a rural, gently rolling landscape. Fish caught at the lake include hybrid striped bass, striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. In Port Oliver, a 2,400-foot-long, ADA-accessible boardwalk has areas for fishing and boat docking. Another point of reference is Barren River VPA #3, at the boundary between Allen County and Warren County.

Boat ramps are available in every recreation area at the lake; several service marinas offer boat rentals, among other services. Check local operating details for boat rentals before your trip. The focus of your trip can be a helpful starting point when choosing where to stay: should your trip center on Scottsville’s history and events, or on fishing and boating experiences at Barren River Lake? Starting your accommodation search with the experiences that matter to you can help you find a place that suits your stay.
