Mining history and landscape are central to a trip to Harlan. The Hensley Settlement offers a glimpse into life in an earlier community; Portal 31 and the Kentucky Coal Museum put coal mining in the spotlight. Forests, hiking trails, routes and a designated swimming area offer further points of interest.

History and Mining

The Hensley Settlement was founded by Sherman Hensley in 1903 and remained inhabited until 1951. Tours begin with a shuttle from the visitor center; on site, they include a one-mile walk. The dates frame the history of the settlement, while the tour includes a specific walking distance.

The United States Coal and Coke Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corp., had a historic mine entrance built at Portal 31 in Lynch, Kentucky. The fully restored site is open to the public. Visitors can board an original mine railcar and ride deep into Portal 31. A 1920s lamp room, original equipment, as well as the bathhouse and L&N train depot from the 1920s, bring the history of Appalachian coal mining to life.

Exhibits at the Kentucky Coal Museum span four levels. They include mining tools, safety equipment and a recreated mine. The collection also offers a unique portrayal of life in a coal camp. The museum’s exhibits bring working life and everyday life together.

Events are another part of the cultural scene. The Pine Mountain Settlement School hosts Fair Day & Sorghum Stiroff, the Nativity Play, summer camps, Fall Color Weekend and Wildflower Weekend each year. One specific historical edition is the Harlan County Poke Sallet Festival: it was held for the 71st time in 2026, from Thursday, June 4, to Saturday, June 6. These dates refer to the 2026 edition.

Forests, Mountains and Trails

Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve protects 3,509 acres of old-growth and secondary forests. Kingdom Come State Park preserves 1,283 acres of pristine wilderness. There, Log Rock is a natural sandstone bridge. The park has 14 hiking trails that extend across nearly 5 miles of rugged mountain terrain. These figures give an idea of both the size of the protected area and the character of the trails.

The Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area covers about 7,000 acres of mountainous terrain. Two named routes offer further points of reference: the Little Shepherd Trail is a narrow, 38-mile route along Pine Mountain. It runs from US 421 east of Harlan to US 119 south of Whitesburg. Dragon Slayer Hwy 160 is a 20-mile scenic route with more than 226 sharp curves. The Little Shepherd Trail is described by its route and endpoints; Dragon Slayer is distinguished by its length and number of curves.

Visitor Information

At Martins Fork Lake, Smith Recreation Area Beach is the designated swimming area; swim only in this area. Boats are limited to 10 hp: only boats with engines rated at or below this power may operate on the lake.

The Dragon Slayer Hwy 160 Visitor Center is located at 7 East Main Street in Lynch, Kentucky. Check the address before your visit. Downtown Harlan has a visitor center and a 7,000-square-foot convention center. These are two distinct destinations: a visitor address in Lynch and facilities in downtown Harlan.

When planning, you can weigh the options against one another: the Hensley Settlement combines a guided tour with a shuttle and walk, hiking trails through rugged mountain terrain are the focus at Kingdom Come State Park, and specific rules for swimming and boat engines apply at Martins Fork Lake. This makes it possible to consider the activities according to their distinct character, rather than treating them as the same kind of outing.
