Historic Lake Scott State Park encompasses a 100-acre, spring-fed lake. Deeply carved, wooded canyons and rugged rock cliffs define the landscape. Together with its historic sites, this makes nature and history a clear focus for a trip to Scott County: you can plan for them as distinct yet connected interests.

At Lake Scott: Lake and Landscape

Scott State Fishing Lake is within the state park. West of the park is a 160-acre wildlife area. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, the Lake Scott West Loop is another specific option: the 2.9-mile hiking trail is rated easy and has a natural surface. Its length and difficulty rating can help you fit it into your day’s plans without confusing it with a tour of historic exhibits.

History and Exhibits

The ruins of Pueblo El Cuartelejo are in Historic Lake Scott State Park. The El Quartelejo Museum displays a replica of the pueblo, as well as rocks, fossils, and other historical exhibits. The Steele Home in the park serves as a museum, where you can see furnishings and tools used by early settlers. If you plan to visit the Steele Home, check visiting options in advance.

The Battle of Punished Woman's Fork also offers a historical perspective on the region. On September 27, 1878, the site was the setting for a confrontation between the U.S. Army and a group of Northern Cheyenne. The Scott County Historical Society describes the event as the last encounter in Kansas between Indigenous peoples and United States troops. At the historic site, visitors can hike the hills and see visible rifle pits, Pack Horse Canyon, and Sanctuary Cave.

For art and other historical objects, consider visiting the Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection, adjacent to the El Quartelejo Museum. It displays original works of art and a collection of rare historical artifacts. The museum exhibits, pueblo ruins, and historic site offer different points of interest: archaeological history, collections, and a 19th-century event.

Explore Scott City on Foot and in Everyday Life

The Scott City Historic Walking Tour follows the original town layout, from the Maria DeGeer statue to the El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection. The statue honors Maria DeGeer, described as the founder of Scott City. A tour brochure is available at the El Quartelejo Museum, the Scott City Chamber office, City Hall, or at the statue at DeGeer Corner on Main Street; the tour is also available as a smartphone app.

The Beefiesta Tasting Booths offer a different way to experience Scott City: on the Saturday of Fair Week, immediately after the parade, several businesses grill meat and serve bite-sized portions for sampling. The booths are in Patton Park (City Park) on Main Street. The event is therefore tied to a specific point in the Fair Week schedule.

Recreation and Seasonal Events

The annual Carp Derby at Lake Scott State Park usually takes place on the first weekend in June. Check the event date if you would like to plan your trip around it. This helps distinguish a recurring event from the natural and historical attractions described throughout the year.

Within the city limits of Scott City, Maddux Park offers both a skatepark and a walking path: the winding path is a quarter-mile long and runs through the 3.5-acre park. The skatepark is suitable for skateboards, roller skates, and bicycles, and includes several rails and ramps as well as a basketball hoop. As park amenities can change, it is a good idea to check their current condition before making a visit a firm part of your plans. Scott Community Golf Course, a 9-hole golf course, is also within the city limits.

Scott City Municipal Airport serves local and regional air traffic. Frontier Ag Inc. provides FBO services at the airport, including hangar rental, fueling, aircraft maintenance, a pilot lounge with Dish TV, and rental cars.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

Events add seasonal highlights: the Carp Derby usually takes place in early June, while Beefiesta is held on the Saturday of Fair Week. This distinction can help you plan the stay you want around nature, culture, an event date, or activities.
