Discover Stevens County
Accommodation in Stevens County
Stevens County brings together two historical perspectives: the Santa Fe Trail and development surrounding the Hugoton Gas Field. It also features individual historic buildings and markers, recreational opportunities, and recurring events. For planning your trip, the time references are especially useful: one Trail segment is described with endpoints and a period, while events are tied to holidays, months, or specific weekends.
Santa Fe Trail: Segment and Marker
Santa Fe Trail–Stevens County Segment 1 is a 1.03-mile section of the Cimarron Route between Lower Spring and Middle Spring. It is also known as Schmidt’s Ruts or Bozone’s Ruts and is classified as a nationally significant historic resource of the Santa Fe Trail: for transportation and commerce along the Cimarron Route from 1822 to 1868. Both names refer to the same segment.
Another historic site associated with the Santa Fe Trail is the Zeiler Crossing (Cimarron River) DAR Marker. It was erected in 1907 and was the only DAR marker associated with the Trail in Stevens County. This puts two distinct forms of historical connection side by side here: a named route segment and a single marker.
Museum Complex and Regional History
The Stevens County Gas & Historical Museum was dedicated on May 16, 1961, and founded in remembrance of the Hugoton Gas Field and the development of Stevens County. The museum complex includes the Santa Fe Hugoton Train Depot, a schoolhouse dating to 1887, and a house from the same year, considered one of the oldest houses in Hugoton. It also includes Hugoton’s first jail building and a church from 1905.
The Hugoton and Panoma natural gas fields also lie partly in Stevens County. Equipment from the gas well drilled in 1945 is displayed at the well site; the well is still producing. Check its current operating status before your trip. The early history of the county also includes the dispute between Hugoton and Woodsdale over the county seat.

Forewinds Golf Course is a nine-hole golf course on the prairie. The Hugoton swimming pool is located in Hugoton City Park on North Main Street. Its seasonal opening period runs from May through August; check the specific dates for your travel year.
Park Day is Hugoton’s annual Independence Day celebration and takes place in the city park. The Gas Capitol Car Club & Rod Run Show is held annually on the fourth Saturday in August. In May, during Guymon’s Pioneer Days, the Annual Diamond Cross Arena Open Roping takes place. The W-H Ranch Horse Rendezvous runs from Thursday to Sunday on Mother’s Day weekend. These events are tied to different calendar dates, so check their dates before your trip.
Other local topics include movies and breakfast: the High Plains Theatre provides a venue for films. The Jet Drive-In has been operating since 1964 and is known for large breakfasts, especially pancakes with a side of bacon. These details offer different starting points for planning—from Trail and county history to recreational opportunities and recurring events.
