Leavenworth County offers several perspectives for a culture-focused trip: military history at Fort Leavenworth, historic collections, architecture, and trails along the Missouri River. In Tonganoxie, a historic site, the town center, and public sports facilities round out the picture. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.

Fort Leavenworth and Its History

The historic Fort Leavenworth is home to the Frontier Army Museum. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the military exploration of the American West. The museum also presents the history of Fort Leavenworth from 1827 to 1917, as well as the history of the Frontier Army from 1804 onward. The collection includes military artifacts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Historic Wayside Tour covers 22 points of interest throughout Fort Leavenworth.

Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery also represents several historical points of reference. It was one of 14 national cemeteries designated or established as such in 1862, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 15, 1999. The Buffalo Soldier Monument honors the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiments. The Berlin Wall Memorial recalls the historic barrier that divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War. These memorial sites touch on different chapters rather than focusing on just one era of military history.

Historic Homes and Museums

The Rookery is the oldest continuously occupied residence in Kansas. Carroll Mansion is a Victorian home from the 1880s, featuring handcrafted woodwork, stained-glass windows, and antiques from the Victorian era through the early 20th century. The Ella Carroll Memorial Rose Garden is located in the brick circular driveway of the Carroll Mansion Museum. The house, garden, and historic furnishings each highlight a different aspect: architecture, craftsmanship, and designed outdoor space.

The C.W. Parker Carousel Museum houses a fully operational 1913 carousel, originally made in Leavenworth by the C.W. Parker Carousel Amusement Company. Exhibits also include the oldest primitive carousel in the United States and a 1950s aluminum carousel by Paul Parker. Private tours can be arranged on weekdays for groups of 20 or more. The First City Museum displays memorabilia and artifacts from Leavenworth’s early frontier, railroad, and manufacturing industries, as well as from corrections, telegraphy, and crafts.

Opened in 1992, the Richard Allen Cultural Center is located across from the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church, which was part of the Underground Railroad. The Center offers insight into African American history at both the local and national levels. Its subjects range from regional life stories to broader historical contexts.
