Poweshiek County Conservation manages nine park and wildlife areas covering a total of more than 2,173 acres; these areas are dedicated to public use and recreation. Poweshiek County brings together scenic and cultural highlights, from Diamond Lake and wooded ravines to arts and history in Grinnell.

Natural Areas and Trails

Diamond Lake Park includes a 90-acre lake and hiking trails. The paved Stagecoach Trail connects the park directly to the town of Montezuma; its northern section runs through the Diamond Lake Wildlife Area and offers opportunities to observe wildlife. These provide different options for planning your outings: trails in the park, a direct connection to Montezuma, and wildlife watching along the northern section.

Fleming Woods, a 38-acre state preserve, is located in southern Poweshiek County. It contains wooded ravines characteristic of the rolling landscape of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain. The Millgrove Access Wildlife Area contains one of the few remaining unchannelized sections of the North Skunk River.

For choosing a nature experience, the contrast is clear: Diamond Lake offers a lake and hiking trails, Fleming Woods offers wooded ravines, and Millgrove Access offers an unchannelized stretch of river.

History, Art and Architecture in Grinnell

The Grinnell History Hike begins at the train station at 1014 3rd Ave and introduces visitors to the town’s history. Grinnell’s Methodist Church is the town’s oldest church building and was built in 1895. The former Poweshiek County Jail houses a museum with artifacts from Poweshiek County. Fitzsimmons School, also called Scott Township School Number 7, conveys the character of a one-room country school from the 1890s. The hike introduces local history, while the church, museum, and school offer specific historical themes.
