Emmet County: Lakes, Landscapes and History
Accommodation in Emmet County
A large, shallow glacial lake, gently rolling farmland, a river trail, and places connected to regional history give a trip to Emmet County several different focuses.
Lakes and Landscapes
Cheever Lake State Preserve covers 367 acres and contains a large, shallow glacial lake. Cheever Lake is a natural lake with no outlet and is designated as a biological and geological State Preserve. Nearly 90 wetland plant species are found at the lake. The site brings together a distinctive geological feature and diverse plant life.
At High Lake, Wolden Recreation Area covers 65 acres, making it considerably smaller than Cheever Lake State Preserve. Fort Defiance State Park offers a different landscape: its 191 acres include rugged, wooded areas surrounded by gently rolling farmland. At Cheever Lake, the shallow lake and wetland plants shape the scenery; at Fort Defiance, woods and agricultural landscapes take center stage.
On Foot, on Horseback, and on the Water
Pappy's Lakeside is located along a hiking trail north of Wolden Recreation Area. Horseback riding is permitted on three trails in Fort Defiance State Park. Those who would rather experience the landscape on the water will find a designated route on the Emmet County West Fork of the Des Moines Water Trail.
The Water Trail offers a 5.8-mile float from the North Trailhead to the 4th Street Bridge Access. Water levels and seasonal rental options may change, so check these conditions when planning. The Des Moines River Water Trail begins its route through Iowa in Emmet County. You should also check the route details for this Water Trail before setting out.
Places of Regional History
The Brugjeld/Peterson Family Farmstead is a rare surviving Norwegian immigrant farm of local significance in Emmet County and northwest Iowa. It offers insight into a specific aspect of Norwegian immigration history. The Emmet County Historical Society museum complex displays hundreds of exhibits on Estherville's history. It includes a blacksmith shop and a one-room schoolhouse, placing historic craftwork and daily life in a small school alongside the other exhibits on the city's history.
Along the Des Moines River is the Estherville Rock Garden, established in the 1930s. A piece of the Estherville Meteorite is housed at the Meteorite Center in Estherville. A monument on Highway 4, north of Estherville, marks the meteorite's location. The exhibit at the Center and the monument offer two different connections to this local event: the preserved fragment and the marked site.
