Clay County: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Clay County
Four access points on the Inkpaduta Canoe Trail are located in Clay County. This provides a practical starting point for a trip with several possible focuses: in addition to paddling, you can consider natural areas, outdoor trails, history, and seasonal events. This lets you plan around the interests you want to prioritize.
Nature, Water and Trails
The Kindlespire Complex is a 310-acre wildlife area on the Little Sioux River. Wanata Park has hiking trails along the floodplains and hills of the same river. The two natural sites therefore have different focuses: Kindlespire is a wildlife area, while Wanata offers trails through the river landscape.
Scharnberg Park has a 15-acre pond with an accessible fishing pier. This adds a pond with fishing opportunities to the options of river scenery and hiking trails. If fishing is one of your interests, the pier is a practical point of reference.
The North School Trail begins at North School Park, extending north and offering a route for walking and cycling. This adds a distinct focus on recreation alongside the hiking trails at Wanata Park and the fishing pier at Scharnberg Park.
History in Galleries and the Townscape
The Clay County Heritage Center houses two galleries and most of the collection on Clay County history. Exhibits include the permanent exhibition “This Land We Call Home – Settling Clay County” and changing temporary exhibitions. The center thus combines a lasting look at the county’s history with additional topics.
The Parker Museum is a historic house museum in the Arts and Crafts style, built in 1916 for the Roy Webb family. The Fort Peterson Blockhouse is the only surviving remnant of the Northern Border Brigade’s chain of fortifications. The Parker Museum focuses on the home, its architectural style, and its year of construction; the blockhouse points to the history of the chain of fortifications.
In Spencer, you can explore the Historic Grand Avenue Commercial District on a walking tour. This offers another way to include history in your travel plans: you can experience the historic commercial district on a walking tour rather than focusing on an exhibition or a single building. Galleries, a historic home, and a walking tour of a commercial district provide different ways to explore history.
Golf and Seasonal Experiences
The Spencer Municipal Golf Course is open to the public. Since public-play conditions may change, check them before your visit. West Side Vineyard is open for tours and hosts an annual Harvest Fest in summer. If you plan to take a tour, confirm the arrangements before your trip. For the Harvest Fest, check the dates for your travel period.
