Osceola County offers a variety of ways to explore: geological traces at Ocheyedan Mound, trails through several habitats, recreational activities, and local collections. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between nature experiences centered on landscapes and geological history, and the attractions in Sibley, Ashton, and Ocheyedan.

Landscape, Geology, and Trails

At Ocheyedan Mound, geological history and nature come together. It was formed about 13,000 years ago by the Wisconsin Glacier and is preserved as a natural area and used as an outdoor classroom. Its vegetation includes Little Bluestem and Sideoats Grama; Porphyry, granite, Sioux quartzite, and limestone are also found at the mound. Traditionally, it is regarded as a lookout point and a place of mourning for Indigenous people.

The hiking trails in Osceola County pass through wetlands, woodlands, and elevated habitats. One specifically measured trail is the 4.7-mile, crushed-rock Ed Winkel Memorial Trail. Its length and surface offer a different focus from the diverse habitats traversed by the county’s hiking trails. The Osceola County Conservation Board manages about 1,900 acres of public land, most of which is open to public hunting.

Ocheyedan Pits Recreation Area also combines nature and recreation: the 33-acre recreation area offers a picnic shelter, restrooms and water, as well as camping, fishing, and swimming, and a nature trail. At Hawkeye Point, the Osceola County Board of Supervisors acquired the area in 2008 with the goal of keeping it permanently accessible to the public. Hawkeye Point Campground has 12 sites with electrical and water hookups.

The Iowa Golf Association named it “Course of the Year” in the category of Iowa’s best 9-hole golf course. These details offer practical guidance for anyone planning to include a round of golf in their trip.

The parks also offer different options for a more leisurely visit: Sunrise Park includes a natural area, a pergola with a picnic table, a trail, and benches. Robinson Pond in Sam Robinson Memorial Park is stocked with several fish species. Central City Park is home to the McCallum Museum and Brunson Heritage House.

Local History and Getting Around

Local collections offer insight into the history of the communities. Tracy House in Ocheyedan contains items dating from before 1902 that were donated by the local community. DeBoer Grocery Museum is on Main Street in Ashton. It preserves artifacts from DeBoer's Grocery Store, Knutsen's Clothing Store, Hoffman's Shoe Repair, and St. Joseph's Grade School and High School.
