Murray County: Cherokee Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Murray County
A historic Cherokee home, trails in Fort Mountain State Park, and seasonal offerings shape the excursion options in Murray County. When looking for a hotel, it’s worth first considering which activities will define your travel days. This can help you make a selection that suits your planned stay.
Cherokee Heritage and Historic Sites
Stops on the Chieftain Trail in Murray County include Chief Vann House and Fort Mountain State Park. Chief Vann House is Georgia’s best-preserved historic Cherokee home. Tours are offered at the house; check tour times before your visit so this activity fits your travel days.
God’s Acre includes a burial ground for people believed to have been Moravian missionaries. They are said to have been invited to the area by Chief James Vann in 1801. At the highest point of Fort Mountain is an old, 855-foot-long stone wall, which gives Fort Mountain State Park its name. The county brings together different historical connections: a home with Cherokee history, a burial ground, and a distinctive wall.
