Winder is located in North Georgia’s Barrow County, between Athens and Atlanta. Parks, theater, railroad history, and county attractions give your trip a variety of focal points—from a visit to Fort Yargo State Park to the seasonal farmers market.

Parks and Trails Around Winder

Fort Yargo State Park is located in Winder. A two-story log cabin stands there; it was built in 1792 for protection from the Muskogee and Cherokee. The Will-A-Way Recreation Area is also part of the park’s history: it opened in 1971 and was the first comprehensive outdoor recreation facility in the United States designed for people with disabilities.

A paved trail runs from Lee Street alongside the creek to a bridge where the creek flows into the lake, and ends at the park’s visitor center. White’s Mill Park offers a different trail surface: an unpaved, 2.3-mile nature trail runs alongside Cedar Creek.

Winder Legacy Park has an inclusive playground and Barrowsaurus, a 28-foot-tall rope climbing pyramid. The park is free to visit and open daily from sunrise to sunset. Jug Tavern Park hosts Winder’s special annual events, the Spooktacular Halloween Festival and Santa’s After Party.

History, Art, and the Stage

The Winder Railroad Depot at 6 Porter Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Trains pass through Winder several times a day, but no longer stop at the depot; if you plan around train times, check the current schedule. A small railroad museum downtown displays a caboose from the SCL/L&N Georgia Clinchfield West Point Route, as well as Gainesville Midland Railroad steam locomotive No. 208, a 2-10-0 Decapod.

The Barrow County Museum is housed in the former Barrow County jail, built in 1914. Its exhibits cover Senator Richard B. Russell, the county’s history, and Fort Yargo. The Winder Cultural Arts Center houses the Colleen O. Williams Theatre; programs and exhibitions include visual arts, music, theater, and dance.

Winder-Barrow Community Theatre also offers performance opportunities, workshops, and education in the theatrical arts. Concerts and performances are held at the Innovation Amphitheatre on Austin Road. Together, these venues offer a look at different aspects of cultural life, from exhibitions and music to theater programs and live performances.

County Parks and the Farmers Market

Barrow County’s parks and recreation system includes lighted tennis courts, pickleball courts, sports fields, playgrounds, pavilions, a dog park, and an outdoor walking track. Victor Lord Park covers more than 100 acres and includes a multi-purpose recreation center. Barrow County Parks and Recreation rents fields and facilities for public tournaments.

The Barrow County Farmers Market brings together more than two dozen local farms, food producers, and artisans. Offerings include fresh produce, pasture-raised eggs, jams, baked goods, and handmade products; the market also features seasonal events and activities for children. In 2026, it takes place on Saturdays from April 4 through November 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For later seasons, check the dates in effect at that time.
