Washington County combines a layered local history with opportunities for outdoor activities. Historic cemeteries, museums, and buildings tell different chapters of the region’s story; Hamburg State Park adds a working watermill and a hiking trail. Walks and disc golf are also practical options to consider when planning your trip.

Local History in Cemeteries, Museums, and Buildings

Old City Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Washington County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its historical significance and listing on the register make it a distinctive stop for travelers interested in the county’s history.

Sandersville High and Industrial School was founded in 1888 and was the first school for Black students in Washington County. The Thomas Jefferson Elder Community Center houses a museum about the school and the county’s history; the center is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The history of an educational institution and the history of the county are both brought together here.

The Old Jail Museum offers tours where visitors can see the original cells, mechanical locking mechanisms, and graffiti left by former inmates. The museum is housed in a Victorian-era building constructed in 1891 as both the sheriff’s residence and a jail. The tour thus combines a glimpse of the preserved jail spaces with the building’s history.

Historic homes and church buildings also tell stories from different periods. The Brown House Museum was originally built in 1850 as Woodland Terrace by Nathan Haynes. Bethlehem Baptist Church dates to around 1790 and is the oldest Baptist church in Washington County. Its current building was rebuilt at its present location after a fire in 1890.

In Warthen, the restored jail is made of hand-hewn logs and is considered Georgia’s oldest log jail. The entire village of Warthen, including the jail, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to Washington County can also see Jefferson Davis’s campsite just outside Warthen. The bandstand on Courthouse Square continues to be used for events and photo opportunities.

Watermill, Trails, and Outdoor Activities

Hamburg State Park is home to a restored, water-powered gristmill dating from 1921. It is still operational and grinds corn during events. The Red Trail in the park is about 1.5 miles long. Here, a specific piece of milling technology sits alongside the trail, though the two offer different kinds of visits.

In Sandersville, Linton Park is located on North Avenue, where visitors can enjoy a walking path. The Depot Disc Golf Course offers a different kind of outdoor activity: the course has 18 holes and spans just over a mile. The approximately 1.5-mile Red Trail and the disc golf course therefore differ both in activity and in the details provided.

For cyclists, Tennille is a useful point of reference in Washington County: it lies along the Athens-to-Savannah cycling route. Together with the hiking trail at Hamburg State Park, the walking path in Sandersville, and the disc golf course, it offers a range of activities. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether historic sites, walking trails, or cycling should be the focus of your stay.
