In northeast Georgia, Habersham County lies at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can focus your trip in different ways: lakeside trails, places with local history, or annual festivals. The following destinations and themes can help you choose how to spend your days in the county.

Nature and Trails

Lake Russell Recreation Area is in the Chattahoochee National Forest near Cornelia. Lake Russell covers 100 acres and is part of the National Forest. The 4.6-mile Lake Russell Trail loops along the shore. Its lakeside route and length give this hike a clear focus on the landscape.

The 2.7-mile Sourwood Trail offers a shorter loop. Nancytown Falls is at mile 1.5 of the trail. This gives you two loops of different lengths to compare; the Sourwood Trail also has a named landmark along the route in the form of the waterfall. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Panther Creek Park and Falls is also associated with outdoor activities in Habersham County. Along with Lake Russell Recreation Area, it adds to the options for travelers who want to make nature the focus of their stay.

Sports and Local History

Johnny Mize was born on January 7, 1913, in Demorest, Habersham County, and was a Hall of Fame first baseman. The Johnny Mize Athletic Center and Museum is on the Piedmont College campus in Demorest and displays memorabilia from his life. His birthplace and the collection provide a specific connection to Mize’s biography and baseball history.

In Cornelia, the Cornelia Depot Railroad Museum is one of the attractions. The Donald Anderson City Park and Amphitheater is also downtown. The park is a public gathering place and serves as a venue for concerts.

Mauldin House and Garden is a historic homestead in town with exhibits on family and local history. The grounds also include Big Holly Cabin, an original one-room log cabin. The combination of the homestead, exhibits, and cabin offers several specific ways to explore local history.

The Loudermilk Boarding House was built in 1908 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Loudermilk Boarding House & Everything Elvis Museum has more than 30,000 Elvis items. The building’s history and the collection offer different points of interest: one is connected to the historic building, the other to Elvis memorabilia.

Festivals and Trip Planning

Two annual festivals connect trip planning with specific months and places. The Mountain Laurel Festival takes place in Clarkesville in May; the Big Red Apple Festival is held every October in Cornelia. If one of the festivals is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the year in question.

The highway connections also provide specific points of reference for getting around the region: US 441 and US 23 intersect in Habersham County, and both are four-lane highways. When planning a hotel stay, it helps to decide on your focus first: the trails are suited to a nature trip, museums and historic buildings to a cultural stay, and the festivals provide a monthly guidepost.
