A 60-mile drive, bottomland forests along Ebenezer Creek, and historic sites in Ebenezer and Springfield reveal different sides of Effingham County. The Historic Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway, nature and forest themes, and the history of churches, museums, and theaters give your trip several clear focal points.

The Scenic Byway as a guide

The Historic Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway is a 60-mile drive along state and local roads. It passes through Ebenezer, Guyton, Springfield, and Rincon. This makes the route a good fit for travelers who want to connect several named communities in one drive while keeping a clearly defined distance in mind.

The byway begins on Fourth Street at the viaduct. From I-95, take Exit 109 and follow GA Highway 21 through Rincon to the viaduct; there, you will reach Fourth Street. These directions connect the starting point with a specific approach. For planning, it is also helpful to know that the route uses both state and local roads.

Bottomland forests, woodland, and trails

Ebenezer Creek is a tributary of the Savannah River. Its banks are lined with pristine bottomland forests of bald cypress and water tupelo. The creek is designated a Georgia Scenic River and a National Natural Landmark. Several access points and boat ramps provide access to the creek. Its connection to the river, bottomland forest, and two designations together shape the nature theme here.

Another forest destination is the Mary Kahrs Warnell Forest Education Center in Effingham County. It encompasses 3,200 acres of managed forest and is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check opening hours before you go. The center’s managed forests and the pristine bottomland forests along the creek represent distinct landscape descriptions.

The TREC Trail is a public trail system in Effingham County that provides recreational opportunities. Along with the forest center and Ebenezer Creek, it adds further nature-themed options to your Scenic Byway drive as you plan your trip.

History and culture in Ebenezer and Springfield

New Ebenezer was founded in 1736 by Lutheran Salzburgers seeking a place of religious freedom. Ebenezer was founded in 1734 as a military defense outpost for Savannah. Ebenezer also became Georgia’s first capital. These historical milestones offer different perspectives on the area’s past: the search for religious freedom, its military founding, and its role as a capital.

Jerusalem Lutheran Church is the oldest Lutheran church in America with continuous worship services. It was built of bricks made from local clay between 1767 and 1769, and its walls are 21 inches thick. The congregation welcomes visitors to Ebenezer. The construction period, materials, and wall thickness make the architecture a tangible part of the town’s history.

In Springfield, the Effingham Historic Society Museum and Living History Site displays historic artifacts that tell the story of Effingham County. Also in Springfield is the Mars Theatre, which opened in 1945. Today it hosts concerts and live music, and its regular program includes current first-run releases and popular film classics. If you are planning a specific concert or movie outing, check the current event schedule.

Choose a focus for your trip

The outing options offer different highlights: the Scenic Byway is a drive through several communities, the river and bottomland forest shape the nature theme at Ebenezer Creek, and history, architecture, and culture take center stage in Ebenezer and Springfield. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first decide which of these aspects matters most for your trip. That way, you can choose your travel focus based on the experiences that interest you.
