Elbert County: Granite History, Lakes, and Nature
Accommodation in Elbert County
Elbert County combines waterside nature with local history. Travelers who plan their trip around their interests will find specific themes, from shoreline trails and fishing to granite, historical figures, and cultural sites.
Parks, Lakes, and Activities
Bobby Brown Park covers 665 acres in Elbert County and provides access to the 71,100-acre Clarks Hill Lake. The park and lake therefore represent different scales of landscape. The park has a suspension bridge and also offers archery. When water levels are low, visitors can see some of the city’s foundations there. This historic landscape detail is tied to low water levels.
At Richard B. Russell State Park, visitors can fish at Lake Richard B. Russell. A nature trail follows the shore to a steel-bolt bridge. The park also has a 1.29-mile loop trail. The loop trail offers a specific distance for planning, while the bridge gives the shoreline trail a distinctive destination. Those looking to include fishing and a walk by the water in their trip will find two different points of interest here.
The Elbert County Wildlife Management Area offers hunting for deer, turkeys, and small game. So, in addition to shoreline trails and fishing, hunting-related outdoor activities are also among the options you can consider when planning your trip.
Granite and Local History
A granite deposit lies beneath Elbert County in the Piedmont geologic province. Granite also features in Elberton’s history: at the Elberton Granite Museum & Exhibit, the statue “Dutchy” was the first statue made from Elberton granite. The Granite Bowl was built over Elberton’s original spring and has 20,000 seats. Together, these tell two different stories about the history of the material and its specific connection to the place.
The Nancy Hart Log Cabin marks the approximate location of Hart’s frontier cabin on River Road in Elbert County. The replica cabin was built during the Great Depression by Civilian Conservation Corps workers. These two details link the approximate location of the frontier cabin with the construction history of its replica.
Old Dan Tucker’s Grave is the burial site of Reverend Daniel Tucker. Tucker was a Methodist clergyman who spent much of his time teaching and praying with enslaved people. The song about Old Dan Tucker also became a well-known part of American folk music. Biographical accounts and a cultural topic with significance beyond local history therefore sit alongside one another.
The Elbert Theatre opened on February 23, 1940. After renovations, it reopened as a performing arts venue in 2001. The two dates mark different milestones in the theater’s history: its opening in 1940 and its reopening after renovations in 2001.
