Matlacha: Art, Fishing and Paddling
Accommodation in Matlacha
Matlacha combines an arts-focused town center with fishing and paddling opportunities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Matlacha, you can plan your stay around your interests on the water and in town. Highlights include murals and galleries, Matlacha Pass and its habitats, as well as fishing spots and guided paddling tours. A stroll, fishing, and a tour are all different ways to spend time in the area.
Townscape, Art, and History
Matlacha is one of Florida’s few remaining fishing villages. The town center consists of simple, locally characteristic wood-frame buildings and has a long connection to activities on the water. As you stroll between art galleries and casual cafés, you’ll come across brightly painted buildings and vibrant murals.
Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens in Matlacha serves as Leoma Lovegrove’s studio and island gift shop. At Bat House Park, murals adorn a historic building that once housed The Snook Inn. The World’s Fishing-est Bridge in Matlacha is also a fishing spot.
Matlacha Pass: Landscape and Paddling
Matlacha Pass is a shallow estuary with important seagrass and oyster habitats. The mangrove islands in the pass provide habitat for nesting bird colonies; Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve features towering mangroves. The preserve is designated an Outstanding Florida Waterbody. The Great Calusa Blueway map covers Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass in detail.
Matlacha Pass is accessible via parks and boat ramps operated by Lee County and the City of Cape Coral. Guided paddling tours on Section 2 of the Great Calusa Blueway can be taken from Matlacha. This makes guided paddling a distinct option alongside the area’s other fishing opportunities.
Fishing Spots and Amenities at Matlacha Park
If you’d like to fish, you can choose between two named locations: The World’s Fishing-est Bridge in Matlacha is a fishing spot; Matlacha Park has a large, lighted fishing pier with fish-cleaning stations. The park also offers a launch area and a place to launch paddle boats and other paddle watercraft. Its playground is suitable for children ages 2 to 12.
Matlacha Boat Ramp has a boat ramp with two launch lanes and 30 parking spaces for vehicles with boat trailers. Together with the fishing pier and paddling launch at Matlacha Park, these provide different starting points for activities on the water.
Gulf Coast Kayak offers Mangrove Maze Guided Eco Tours, where you can learn about the wildlife and history of Matlacha/Pine Island. Kayak fishing charters in Matlacha/Pine Island are also available. This offers distinct options for paddling with an educational focus and kayak fishing. Availability may change; check current offerings before making plans.
An Evening with Local Artists
On the second Friday of each month, Matlacha hosts an evening with local artists, musicians, and additional food vendors from 5 to 8 p.m. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the specific date in advance.
