Discover Boca Grande
Accommodation in Boca Grande
Boca Grande features two distinct coastal landscapes: white-sand beaches on the Gulf side and sheltered waterways on the bay side. The area is also home to important wildlife habitats, as well as buildings and museums that bring different chapters of local history to life.
Coast, Water, and Nature
White-sand beaches stretch along the Gulf side. On the bay side, sheltered waterways run through and alongside a natural mangrove coastline. Looking at Boca Grande’s landscape, you can compare two distinct types of shoreline: open sandy beaches and sheltered waterways along the mangrove fringe.
Habitats for gopher tortoises and eastern indigo snakes are protected at Gasparilla Island State Park near Boca Grande. Snorkeling is also possible in the park. The park brings habitat protection and snorkeling together.
The Boca Grande Bike Path covers 35 acres. The area provides habitat for a wide variety of plants, animals, and birds. This adds a natural dimension to the coastal themes: alongside the beach and mangrove coastline, biodiversity is one of the defining features of the area.
There is a launch site for paddlecraft at the beach access on 19th Street East. Access conditions may change, so check them before your visit. This gives you a specific place to launch a paddlecraft, while the sheltered waterways characterize the scenery on the bay side.
Lighthouses and Museum Exhibits
The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, originally known as Gasparilla Island Light Station, is the oldest building on Gasparilla Island. It has served as a lighthouse for mariners since 1890. A comprehensive museum opened in the lighthouse in 1999. Its rooms are arranged chronologically and cover cultural and social history from 12,000 BC to the present, spanning from the earliest period mentioned through today.
Another historic structure is the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse. Its 105-foot tower was built in 1881 by the Phoenix Iron Company in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1927, the U.S. Lighthouse Service had it rebuilt and erected on Gasparilla Island, just south of the town of Boca Grande. BIPS offers a History Tour Climb there. The opportunity to climb is subject to scheduled dates and conditions; check these before planning your visit.
Local History and Culture
The Gasparilla Inn is also part of the town’s history: it opened in Boca Grande in 1911. The Boca Grande Community Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the early 1970s, local residents converted the building into a center for educational and cultural programs. This history links its historic designation with the building’s later use for community education and cultural activities.
The Amory Memorial Chapel was built in 1959 by Louise and Roger Amory for the African American community on Gasparilla Island. It was formerly called Shiloh Baptist Church. Its construction date, benefactors, and original purpose give the building a distinct place in the history of the island community.
At the History Center, the “Footprints from the Past” collection includes an interactive touchscreen map with numbered points of interest. It offers another way to explore local history by theme: rather than presenting a chronologically organized museum, the collection features points of interest on a map. Each year in March, the Boca Grande Art Center also hosts a Spring Show that combines original works of art with floral arrangements. The exact event dates vary; check them for your travel year.
