Discover Bonita Springs: Nature, Coast and History
Accommodation in Bonita Springs
Bonita Springs brings together natural areas, a beach park and historic sites, offering different ways to shape your stay. Lovers Key State Park lies on the northern boundary of Bonita Springs. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bonita Springs, first consider whether wildlife, trails, the beach or history will define your stay. This will help you match the outings that interest you with a hotel’s specific location.
Nature and Landscape
Bonita Nature Place is located on the banks of the Imperial River. The grounds include oak hammocks, pine flatwoods, river forests and aquatic areas. They are also home to more than 24 active gopher tortoises. Opportunities there include educational experiences, volunteering and outdoor activities for families.
Lovers Key State Park offers a different focus: it encompasses four barrier islands and covers 1,616 acres (6.54 km²). The park’s multi-use trails include more than five miles of paths, including the Black Island Trail.
Beach Park and Trails
Bonita Beach Park is a 2.5-acre (10,000 m²) beach park with a boardwalk and swimming area.
History and Events
Riverside Park is home to the historic Liles Hotel. City events take place in the park area, including neighborhood festivals, charity runs and walks, and concerts. If an event is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
The Bonita Springs Historical Society preserves the historic McSwain House, built in 1915. The society hosts informative lecture series and community gatherings throughout the year. For private groups, it can arrange social events, tours and teas at the McSwain House.
The Eagle Hotel is also part of the area’s history: in 1910, it catered to visitors drawn to the hunting and fishing opportunities in what was then a pristine area.
Plan Wildlife Experiences
At Wonder Gardens, you can choose a 45-minute guided tour. Visitors learn about native and exotic wildlife, the facility’s history and its plants. The attraction began in 1936 as The Reptile Gardens, a roadside attraction on the Tamiami Trail. At Flamingo Beach in Wonder Gardens, the experience also includes a lagoon: visitors can observe and interact with animals from the beach or the trail. Since program details may change, it’s advisable to confirm them when booking. Allow 45 minutes for the tour.
