San Miguel: Mission, Adobe, and Wine
Accommodation in San Miguel
San Miguel offers cultural history centered on the mission and the Rios-Caledonia Adobe, wine tastings at individual wineries, and opportunities to cycle on back roads. If you’re looking for a hotel in San Miguel, consider what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to visit museums, taste wine, or experience the landscape by bike?
Mission San Miguel Arcangel: Building History and Frescoes
Mission San Miguel Arcangel was founded in 1797 by Franciscan Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. Construction of the church was completed by 1821; Esteban Munras designed the interior frescoes. Members of the Salinan people painted the murals, which have never been retouched or painted over. San Miguel Arcangel is also the 16th mission on the California Missions Trail.
Today, the mission is a National Historic Landmark, an active parish, and a museum that welcomes visitors. The museum includes a Salinan room, a historic kitchen, a dining room, and the elegant Sala. The Salinan Heritage Preservation Association helped establish a permanent exhibition about the Salinan at the mission. The museum therefore features a range of topics and spaces, including Salinan history and culture.
Historic Rios-Caledonia Adobe and Local History
You can reach the Historic Rios-Caledonia Adobe via the San Miguel exit from Highway 101; check road conditions before setting out. The original Rios-Caledonia Inn and former stagecoach stop now house a museum and a small gift shop. The Adobe Museum displays photographs and artifacts that help visitors understand the adobe and its surroundings. Material objects belonging to the T'epot'aha'l are also on display.
The grounds have picnic areas and restrooms. San Miguel also has a Historic Downtown Trail Guide and a Downtown Walk with points of interest and a map. If you’re interested in local history, these offer another way to explore San Miguel in addition to visiting the museums.
