When choosing a hotel in Oceano, you can start with the activities and landscapes that suit your trip. At Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, motorized recreation and surfing are part of the experience; at Pismo State Beach, trails run through dune habitat and around Oceano Lagoon. Oceano Park and Campground also has a historical connection to the Chumash. These activities, landscapes, and history offer different focal points.

Dunes and Beach with Different Uses

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area offers 3,600 acres of off-road terrain. The area also includes 1,500 acres of sand dunes for recreation with off-highway motor vehicles, as well as more than five miles of beach open to vehicles. These figures describe different measures: the area of the off-road terrain, the area of the sand dunes, and the length of the beach. This helps put the area’s motorized recreation into perspective. Surfing is also possible at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.

The OHV area begins at Post 2 on the beach, one mile south of Pier Avenue. Beach conditions can affect vehicle access. If you’re planning to use the area this way, it’s a good idea to check conditions before your visit. A California State Parks report dated June 12, 2025, also mentions beach camping in the area.

Trails Along the Dunes and Lagoon

At Pismo State Beach, trails run along the coastal dune habitat and around the freshwater Oceano Lagoon. The distinction from vehicle use is helpful when choosing activities: here, the focus is on trails, dune habitat, and the lagoon, while Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is associated with off-road terrain and beach access for vehicles. The lagoon adds another specific landscape feature to the dunes. If you’d like to explore on foot as well as enjoy motorized beach activities, this offers a different focus for your trip.

Visitor Information and History

The Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center is located at 555 Pier Avenue, at the entrance to Oceano Campground. Check the opening hours before visiting. The center and Post 2 serve as different points of reference: the center has a street address at the campground entrance, while the OHV area begins on the beach south of Pier Avenue.

Oceano’s history is also part of its story. Oceano Park and Campground was once a popular hunting and fishing area for the Chumash. This historical connection adds another perspective on the area to today’s recreational interests. If you’d like to consider history as well as activities when planning, it is a distinct point of interest alongside the dunes, beach, and lagoon.
