In Cayucos, coastal connections meet visible traces of the town’s history. To help plan your trip, you can focus on three specific themes: Cayucos State Beach and the bluff trail in Estero Bluffs State Park, the history of Cayucos Landing, and the events held each year. This can help you shape your stay around whether landscapes, historic places, or a particular occasion are most important to you.

Coast and Trails Around Cayucos

Cayucos State Beach is accessible via Highway 1 and the Cayucos Drive exit; from there, follow Cayucos Drive. The bluff trail in Estero Bluffs State Park starts at the Cayucos access point near Cayucos. It heads north to the access point at San Geronimo Creek. This identifies a starting point, an endpoint, and the direction of the trail—a useful reference if you want to include a trail in your trip plans.

Estero Bluffs State Park preserves and protects a varied coastal landscape: sea stacks, tidal areas, extensive wetlands, low bluffs, and coastal terraces crossed by streams that flow year-round or seasonally. The bluff trail and these protected landscape features offer two different ways to explore the coast: one describes a specific route between access points, while the other describes the park’s landforms. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between following a trail and taking in the variety of the coastal landscape.

Cayucos Landing and the Town’s History

Cayucos Landing is a restored landmark by the sea. It was formerly also known as Cayucos Veteran’s Hall or Cass Warehouse. The name’s history dates back to 1873, when James Cass built a warehouse and pier and called them Cayucos Landing. The warehouse and pier are part of the name’s historical background, while the former names provide additional names for the landmark.

Some original 19th-century buildings also remain along Ocean Avenue. Some of Cayucos’s preserved original buildings are decorated with murals. Together, these details give a specific impression of the town’s history: Cayucos Landing points to its early naming, while the surviving buildings show that parts of the 19th-century development have been preserved to this day. The Cayucos Historical Museum is located in the Veterans Annex at 10 Cayucos Drive. If you’re interested in local history, the museum, the former names of Cayucos Landing, and the preserved buildings offer different points of connection.

Annual Events and Local Businesses

Two events held each year differ in both their occasion and the location named. The Carlin Soulé Memorial Polar Bear Dip is held annually at Cayucos State Beach. Cayucos’s annual Fourth of July celebration includes fireworks launched from the pier.

Another local business in Cayucos is the Brown Butter Cookie Company, a cookie shop and bakery. Business details may change, so check the latest information before visiting. Along with the beach, trail, and local history, you can also choose a specific business and recurring events when planning your trip around your personal interests.
