Orange: Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Orange
The OC Zoo is located in Irvine Regional Park in the city of Orange. Other themes range from a historic Mission to beaches and estuaries. Their different focuses can help you identify which interests to prioritize when planning your trip.
Mission history and an annual event
On November 1, 1776, Saint JunĂpero Serra founded Mission San Juan Capistrano as the seventh of 21 California missions founded by Spain. Today, it is a historic landmark and museum. The Mission’s history also includes Serra Chapel: it is the last surviving Mission church where Saint Serra celebrated Mass. The Mission therefore offers several specific historical points of interest, from its founding to the chapel’s special role.
Another event is the return of the swallows, celebrated at the Mission every year on March 19, Saint Joseph’s Day. The tradition dates back to the early 1930s. If this date matters to your travel plans, check the event schedule in advance.
Coast and cultural landscape at Crystal Cove
Orange County has 42 miles of coastline. At Crystal Cove State Park, the coast and inland area sit side by side: the park includes 3.2 miles of beach and 2,400 acres of inland wilderness. The Crystal Cove Historic District is a 12.3-acre coastal area within the park. The federally listed district includes an enclave of 46 rustic coastal cottages. They were originally built in the 1930s and 1940s as a coastal community around the mouth of Los Trancos Creek. These figures represent different aspects of the park: its beach, wilderness, and the history of the coastal community.
The park offers educational and interpretive programs year-round, including guided hikes, tide pool walks, and geology talks. Specific programs and dates may vary, so check the current schedule if a particular activity is important to your stay.
Beach, nature, and activities
At Huntington State Beach, the beach and wildlife protection go hand in hand: the beach is a nesting protection area for the threatened Snowy Plover and a habitat for the endangered California Least Terns. It is also considered a particularly good place to surf. Swimming is permitted, and lifeguard services are available. Surf fishing is also permitted, provided there are no swimmers nearby. These conditions are especially relevant when weighing different beach activities.
A paved beach path runs for 8.5 miles between Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach. In between is the 3.5-mile Huntington City Beach. For nature experiences away from the shoreline, the Muth Interpretive Center features interactive exhibits about life in and around an estuary. The OC Zoo in Irvine Regional Park in the city of Orange focuses on animals and plants native to the southwestern United States. At Clark Regional Park, an interpretive center houses an extensive fossil collection.
Theme parks and other travel interests
Theme parks also offer different highlights. Knott’s Soak City is a 15-acre water park next to Knott’s Berry Farm. Berry Farm features an authentic 19th-century Ghost Town and hosts five “Seasons of Fun” events throughout the year. Event dates change, so it’s worth checking them before planning your trip.
At Disneyland Park, Jungle Cruise is a water attraction in Adventureland. Incredicoaster is located at Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure Park. If you’re choosing a hotel in Orange, clarifying the purpose of your trip first can help you consider culture, beaches, nature, and theme parks as distinct priorities rather than combining them into a single itinerary.
