Aliso Viejo: Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Aliso Viejo
Aliso Viejo can be explored through a range of travel interests: trails and landscapes sit alongside regional history and culture. Nature highlights include access to Orange County’s trail system, multi-use trails in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, and viewpoints overlooking the ocean and surrounding landscapes. The Soka Performing Arts Center and the Aliso Viejo Ranch project add cultural and historical dimensions. This lets you choose your own focus for your trip, whether it is activity, scenery or culture.
Hiking, Biking and Landscapes
Aliso Viejo has access to Orange County’s trail system. Most trails in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park are multi-use trails for hikers, horseback riders and cyclists. There is also a beginner-friendly bike ride of about 9.5 miles. For trip planning, these serve different purposes: the multi-use trails accommodate several types of activity, while the bike ride offers a specific option for cyclists.
The park has viewpoints overlooking the ocean and surrounding landscapes. If you want to consider the scenery as well as the activity when planning your trip, you can make these views a focus of your visit. This means the nature experience can be considered both in terms of how you get around and the views of the surrounding area.
Wood Canyon Wilderness Park is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals. Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park is part of the 19,000-acre Laguna Coast Greenbelt. These offer two distinct perspectives on nature: rare and endangered species in Wood Canyon Wilderness Park, and the regional context of Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park within the Greenbelt.
History and Culture
Dripping Cave, also known as “Robbers Cave,” is designated a historic landmark and is the largest rock shelter in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Aliso Viejo was originally part of the 22,000-acre Moulton Ranch. These historical references differ in scope: Dripping Cave is a rock shelter within the park, while the ranch history relates to Aliso Viejo’s original affiliation.
The Soka Performing Arts Center is located on the elevated campus of Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo. It includes a 1,032-seat concert hall and a 350-seat black box theater. The seating capacities clearly distinguish the two spaces. The center provides a venue for classical music, jazz, world music and contemporary music. Its two different venue sizes and broad musical range give this cultural destination a distinct profile.
The Aliso Viejo Ranch project preserves and restores historically significant 19th-century buildings, artifacts and agricultural equipment. Aliso Viejo Ranch includes five distinct venues. The plan for the ranch also includes a working farm with fruit and nut orchards, as well as raised-bed vegetable gardens. The preservation of historic resources and the agricultural elements included in the plan are distinct aspects of the project.
