Cross County: Archaeology, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Cross County
Cross County is located on Crowley’s Ridge. Destination highlights include the archaeological site in Parkin, historical connections in Wynne and the landscape of Village Creek State Park. When planning a trip, you can weigh history against outdoor activities; within either focus, specific time periods and trail types can help with orientation.
Landscape and Trails at Village Creek
Village Creek State Park encompasses nearly 7,000 acres of wooded hills and clear streams. For outdoor orientation, the park lists 33 miles of multi-use trails. The Village Creek mountain bike route is also listed at 17 miles. The two lengths are associated with different use designations: one with multi-use trails, the other with a mountain bike route. For comparison, it is therefore worth looking first at the trail type and then at the distance.
The park’s visitor center has a gift shop, and interpretive programs are available year-round. A section of the Trail of Tears can also be hiked in the park. In addition to trails described by their type of use, the area therefore also offers a named trail section.
Archaeology and Interpretation in Parkin
Parkin Archeological State Park preserves a 17-acre Native American village that existed there between 1000 and 1550 AD during the Mississippian culture. This period spans more than five centuries and gives the site a clear historical context. The park is designated a National Historic Landmark; in addition to the history of the village, the site also has a formal historic designation.
Archaeologists found evidence that Hernando de Soto may have visited the site in 1541. The possible year of the visit falls within the period when the village existed there; however, the connection to de Soto remains a possibility.
Park interpreters offer tours, educational programs and special events throughout the year. Along the Village Trail, informational panels help visitors explore the archaeological site. The subject can therefore be explored through both guided programs and information along the trail.
Historical Perspectives in Wynne
The Wynne Commercial Historic District reflects Wynne’s growth as a commercial center for Cross County from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. While Parkin is defined by the period of a Mississippian culture village, Wynne offers a look at the development of a commercial center over several decades.
The Cross County Museum and Archives is housed in the New Hope Elementary School, built in 1939. The construction year is a specific point in time within the district’s broader period. The mural in the Wynne Post Office depicts workers carrying sacks of cotton to a wagon in a Delta cotton field. While the historic district reflects Wynne’s development over several decades, the mural captures a single scene of work and transportation.
