The White River runs through Independence County from west to east. For active days, the Batesville Greenway offers a different kind of experience: the multi-use trail is suitable for running, walking, cycling, and other non-motorized activities. It connects the Fitzhugh Municipal Swimming Pool with Riverside Park. This puts trails, riverfront, and parkland alongside one another as different options for planning your day.

River, Greenway, and Water Activities

Riverside Park combines its location on the White River with playgrounds, walking paths, pavilions, and a large amphitheater. Those who want to use the Greenway can note its two endpoints: the Fitzhugh Municipal Swimming Pool at one end and Riverside Park at the other. Canoes and kayaks can be used for a relaxing trip on the water at Polk Bayou Park. Poke Bayou is another destination for anglers and kayakers and canoeists; it was also the first settlement in the Batesville area.

The Batesville Community Center and Aquatics Park has several different pools: a 25-meter-by-25-yard competition pool, a children’s pool with zero-depth entry, and a heated therapy pool, also with zero-depth entry. The outdoor water park adds two two-story spiral slides and a 400-meter lazy river. The different pool types and dimensions help give a clear picture of the recreational facilities without treating all water activities as the same.

Off-Road Terrain and Sports Facilities

Greasy Bend Off-Road Park is in Independence County near Batesville. The 1,200-acre site has nearly 70 miles of trails. The landscape ranges from wooded trails and rocky climbs to mud holes, sandy stretches, and steep hills. This description conveys the variety of the terrain: the trails pass through distinctly different surfaces and landforms rather than just one type of landscape.

The Paul H. “Rocky” Willmuth Sport Shooting Complex is a different kind of sports facility. It has three skeet fields and five trap fields, as well as a stationary archery range with 12 stations. These figures give a clear overview of the different fields without combining them into a single activity.

Museums, Main Street, and Regional History

The Old Independence Regional Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers self-guided tours. Its historical exhibits include Where the Delta Meets the Ozarks and Region on the Move. The museum also displays archival materials from the 12 counties that made up the original Independence County in 1820. Exhibits on regional development are thus paired with sources that bring the county’s historic boundaries to life.

Downtown Batesville is home to the oldest surviving Main Street in Arkansas. Historic Main Street Batesville includes historic homes and churches, antique shops, boutiques, a historic movie theater, and distinctive dining options. The Melba Theater is an Art Deco-style movie theater and the oldest surviving CinemaScope theater. It serves as a venue for concerts, presentations, private screenings, and benefits. The Mark Martin Museum displays eight of Mark Martin’s race cars; the Batesville Area Arts Council’s Gallery on Main presents rotating art exhibitions.

Architecture and local heritage offer other perspectives: the Cook-Morrow House is an example of American eclectic architecture, which combines different styles. The Independence County Library is housed in the historic Barnett Building on Main Street. Public programs hosted by the Independence County Historical Society have included living history presentations at Pioneer Cemetery in downtown Batesville. On a broader scale, the original Southwest Trail crossed Independence County from northeast to southwest along the edge of the Ozark Escarpment.

Festivals and Local Flavors

The Arkansas Scottish Festival takes place annually in Batesville and is hosted by Lyon College. The Independence County Fair is a recurring community tradition in Batesville. Riverside Park is also home to the White River Wonderland holiday display. For those interested in local flavors, the Independence County Sweet Treat Trail offers special experiences featuring sweet treats. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates for that year’s event in advance.
