A 34,300-acre reservoir, a clear mountain stream, and an annual pickle tradition give Pope County its distinct character. As you plan your trip, you can focus on water activities, nature trails, and regional culture.

Reservoir and Park at Lake Dardanelle

The main area of Lake Dardanelle State Park is in Russellville, on the 34,300-acre reservoir. The park is five miles from Interstate 40. At the state park, you can camp, go boating, and observe wildlife; there is also a fishing pier, park programs, and lake tours led by park interpreters.

The visitor center on the Russellville side of the park brings together themes of nature and history: its aquariums each hold 8,000 gallons, and exhibits cover the history of displacement. Lake Dardanelle State Park is also recognized as a Trail of Tears National Historic Site. Here, the reservoir and its wildlife share the same setting with important historical context.

Fishing, Paddling, and Camping on the Water

Lake Atkins is also set up as a recreation area. Created from Galla Creek and Horsehead Creek, it covers 752 acres. You can fish for bream, crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass in the lake. These named fish species show that fishing is a specific part of the recreational offerings here.

Big Piney Creek is a clear mountain stream that flows through Pope County past rocky bluffs and gravel bars. The stretch between Treat and Long Pool offers a ten-mile canoe trip. Big Piney Creek and the North Fork of the Illinois Bayou also offer opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Longpool Recreation Area is a developed campground on Big Piney Creek.

Old Post Road offers more camping and activities, including boating, birdwatching, and cycling. The campground has 37 reservable campsites with water and electrical hookups. The number of sites and their amenities may change; check the latest information if you plan to stay there. Camping is also available at Lake Dardanelle State Park, so the offerings vary across several bodies of water.

Trails and Wildlife Viewing

Bona Dea Trails & Sanctuary encompasses 186 acres of wetlands and open woodland that provide habitat for a variety of wildlife. Nearly six miles of trails run through the area. Activities include walking, jogging, nature photography, and wildlife viewing. To the north, the Ozark National Forest reaches the border of Pope County.

The trails at Bona Dea Trails & Sanctuary offer a different nature focus from the waterways, with wetlands, open woodland, and wildlife viewing taking center stage. As you plan your days, you can combine these experiences with activities at the reservoir or streams without treating the individual destinations as interchangeable.

History, Art, and Events

The Arkansas River Visitor Center is located at the Russellville Site Office. It tells the story of the River Valley’s development, from settlement by Indigenous peoples to the present day. An interactive computer model lets students operate a lock chamber and simulate locking a towboat and its barge through.

The Potts Inn Museum is housed in a restored antebellum home built sometime between about 1850 and 1858. The house is part of one of the best-preserved stagecoach stations along the Butterfield Overland Mail Route; the grounds also include five log cabins. In Russellville, the Center for the Arts has a 1,875-seat theater. The Norman Hall Art Gallery is located on the Arkansas Tech University campus, in the Norman Hall building.

Traditions and regional products also shape the area. The Pope County Fair has been an annual tradition since 1941. Picklefest celebrates Atkins’s pickle tradition every year on the third weekend in May; check the event date for the year of your trip. The Pope County Farmers Market supplies the Russellville area with locally grown fruits and vegetables, meat, honey, and eggs. Locally made baked goods and crafts are also available.
